Newegg charges a restock fee if you aren't willing to get a replacement of the same item if it is defective and instead want a refund. If you want a replacement of the same item, the only additional cost is for you to ship the item back to them. It's in the fine print when you order.

Appropiate quotes:

"Money Back Guarantee- Refund period
All items except otherwise mentioned, may be returned within 30 days from the original invoice date for a refund. CPU and memory products must be returned within 7 days from the invoice date for a refund. A return authorization number is required for all returns.15% restocking fee may apply. Additional deduction will be made for CPU to account for current market value. These terms apply to refunds. All items have at least a one year warranty except for OEM CPU's which have a 30 day warranty.

Due to manufacturer policies, all Software, Retail Boxed Processors, Notebooks, Blank Media Cartridges, Routers, products are non-returnable. Please contact the Manufacturer.

Refunds are issued back to the original source of the purchase. We do not issue store credit.

Physical damage to any product will void the product's warranty. Modifying a product in a permanent way is considered physically damaged. Newegg.com cannot honor warranty for CPU's that have bent pins, cracked or chipped cores, burnt or otherwise sustained any other type of physical damage. Physical damage voids any warranty previously implied for any product.

Restocking Fee
A 15% restocking fee will be applied to all returns for refund. Shipping charges are non-refundable. No refund after 30 days."

and

"1. NewEgg.com SATISFACTION GUARANTEE - NewEgg.com offers our customers a 30-day satisfaction replacement or refund guarantee on all purchases, except:

7-day replacement or refund guarantee on all CPU/Memory products and refurbished computer products 1.

Note: For CPU, base cost will reflect current market price, and 15% restocking fee will apply after this adjustment. Therefore, total refund is subtracting.

However, to take advantage of NewEgg.com's return guarantee policy, Customer agrees to comply with NewEgg.com's Product Return Procedure as below. Any breach of NewEgg.com's Return Policy Procedure will result in the loss of NewEgg.com's replacement/return guarantee. Furthermore, all return shipments not in compliance with these instructions will be rejected.

Product Return Procedure:

To return a product based upon NewEgg.com's replacement/return guarantee, you must obtain a Return Merchandise Authorization ("RMA") number within the guarantee return period for the product (described above). Please use this link to file for RMA: All RMA must be filed online. NewEgg.com will not accept returns without prior authorization and a RMA number. Once issued, RMA numbers are valid for 15 days within which return products must be received by NewEgg.com. RMA numbers will not be extended or reissued. Customer should prominently display the RMA number(s) on the shipping label of boxes containing the returned product.

Customer is solely responsible for shipping any returned product to NewEgg.com. Customer agrees to use only reputable carriers capable of providing proof of delivery and insurance for the entire value of the shipment. Customer agrees to bear all shipping charges and all risk of loss for the return product during shipment. Customer agrees that all returned products will be 100% complete, in re-saleable condition, and will include the original packaging material, manuals, blank warranty cards, and other accessories provided by the manufacturer. If any component of the returned product is missing, NewEgg.com's Return Procedure will be breached and NewEgg.com will reject the entire return or may choose to impose additional charges against the customer for replacement of the missing component.

NewEgg.com will not refund to Customer the original shipping charges. In addition, NewEgg.com will assess a 15% restocking fee against the Customer's account on all returns for refund."

All this seems very reasonable to me. Some stores will never give you your money back, instead will just repair/replace the item only. In any case, you *DID* read the terms of service before you ordered, didn't you?

Now, as for the restrictions on CPUs (physical damage), you have to understand it's amazingly easy to screw up a processor on the install (especially if it's an AMD chip). This, and the fact that shipping an OEM processor can be troublesome, is why I always buy the retail versions of the processor, which are guarranteed to be packed correctly and have a three year manufacturer's warranty.

I also do most of my shopping at Newegg. Especially for big ticket items, like motherboards, hard drives, etc. Some things like that you just can't afford going with a less reputable site, even if it is significantly cheaper. (It's NOT cheaper if you end up spending the money and getting nothing, getting the wrong thing, or getting something that breaks in a month and then you can't replace it.)

As to the statement about the restocking fee, yes, that's true. But it's also true of every other online reseller I've used. That's just one of the risks you take buying online. I've never come across a site that had a lower restocking fee, though many have higher, such as 20%. You've just got to make sure you're getting what you want before you buy it.

Shipping - yes, Newegg does seem to have higher shipping rates than most places. BUT, that's comparing apples to oranges, since most sites' minimum shipping rates are for UPS ground, while Newegg's is for FedEx Express Saver. If you compare with other sites' shipping rates for the same shipping, Newegg's is actually less.

And then of course there's the extreme speed at which they fill your order. I've never had an order come later than 3 business days after I ordered, and about half the time it comes 2 days after. (And that's with the FedEx Express Saver shipping, which is supposed to take 3 days just for shipping...)

I fear the day NewEgg announces they are going under because they can't turn a profit at the low prices they charge.

Buy.com used to be as great as NewEgg currently is. They were loosing money fast and have started to suck as they had to raise prices and cut corners to attempt to actually make money.

For now at least, NewEgg is close to perfect. Many, many orders and nothing but great prices and service.

Yep, Buy.com sucks now. I bought my vid card there... yeah, it got here in good shape, but it took 2 weeks I think. Never again will I purchase from them.

Newegg... yep, they're great. I sent off my LiteOn 40x/12x/48x exactly a week ago for RMA repairs. And today I got a replacement drive... an all new, retail boxed 48x/24x/48x LiteOn. Needless to say, I'm very pleased.

Actually, I got an ATI 8500DV AIW from Buy.com last month and it was a great transaction. Very quick.

I ordered an Epox EP-8RDA+ mobo from TCWO on Friday afternoon and I just noticed on Fedex's web site that they tried to deliver to my house about 40 minutes ago (Monday afternoon). That's about 72 hours with 48 of those hours on the weekend.

I ordered the XP1700+ and HSF from newegg at the same time and Fedex says that they got into the system about the same time but there is no data since then. That is a Fedex issue and not a newegg issue. I wonder if it fell off a conveyer belt in Memphis.

I need to call Fedex and see if I can pick up my stuff somewhere since my wife is out of town this week.

Wooohooo - toys are here!
