Give us the specs of the machine you're attempting to build.

At the checkout page otherwise known as your "cart" there is a blue tab in the middle that gives system specs.
You can just copy it and paste it here [please delete all the fluff]

Then we can check for the best route to go.

first off I would not buy a dell but if you do I hear they are honest with their rebates and you could probably build that same system or better for around 5oo dollars.

Dell is pretty good, i ordered a dell inspiron 2650 notebook. it had some problems and they exchanged it for a new one! .... and their rebates are sent out fast with tracking, they actually sent me a total of 4 rebates, instead of 2 that i requested, so they sent me a total of $758 in rebates instead of $379!! wow, i'm lucky So, I got my notebook for much, much less than i expect to pay for!

I have no problems with Dell, they make good looking, solid machines, for a decent price. If I didn't build my own, I would buy one

my mom just bought a 8250 w/ p4 2.3 533, 512 ram (not really sure what kind) 40gb 7200 rpm, geforce 4 whatever the lowest one is, burner, dvd etc etc w/ 17" crt, all for around 1100 shipped (they got the 3 year ext warr too)

very nice machine, quiet and does exactly what they want. they have no complaints. I am sure I could have built one cheaper, but I live 4 hrs away and can not provide tech support for them. It is her "business" PC so she has to keep it running

but now that they have a new one, I get to toy around with their old C466

oh, I have a Dell notebook, great notebook! Wife loves it! (it is hers)

so you're saying you can build a p4 2.4 (or equivalent amd cpu) w/512mb ram that includes a cdrw, a dvd drive, 17" crt, etc.

i doubt it...if you can prove it, then post how, because i'm sure there are plenty of people here who would buy it in a heartbeat.

No way!

Yes, I would love to see this one? Actually, it is hard to do to much better than Dell on price because they buy at such a bulkload they get huge discounts. I just don't like all their options (brands on motherboards, memory, speakers, etc.).
