I wholeheartedly agree with Mortis. These days, the only times I buy from local sellers (ie. Best Buy, Staples, etc.) is when they have too good of a deal to pass up.

sMoKiE -

I will make this short and sweet (and probably get everyone here in an uproar).

I bought over $2000 from NewEgg.com in the past 4 months. I initially gave them a rave review. But now, I HIGHLY recommend buying either locally or from another site. For more information on why I say this check here and look at my edited review. To say "Dissatified" would be an understatement - more like sick . I sent an email to NewEgg after a day cooling (2 days ago) with a read receipt - it still hasn't been read!! If that's the kind of service you want go ahead at your risk.

I have bought memory from both of the following links that has it cheaper (second link higher) and received it prompltly:

http://www.1stchoicememory.com/

and

http://www.memory4less.com/memory/sdram.asp

It's your choice but I wouldn't suggest buying absolutly ANYTHING from a company that sends 2 defective $200 video cards and doesn't make righton their mistakes without tying up even more of my money. This is coming from someone that buys all of my hardware online for custom builds for my customers.

NewEgg = Blah .

My $2000.00 worth.

EDIT: BTW, just so you know, read the reviews at ResellerRatings.com but don't base everything on the retailers rating as I did in this case. Read the reviews - both good and bad and take them tounge-in-cheek. Then base your desicion. I have been doing this for two years and for the most part I haven't had any problems. Certinally not one that cost me the amout of down time and inconvienece that this has.

I've bought from crucial but only new items.
This will be my first oem order, it is relatively inexpensive so I will try. Worst case I have Amex stop payment.
Mike, I sympathize with you though $2000 is much more than $100!!!

Tazman, I'm suprised that you had such a bad experience with them. Almost everybody swears by them. I've used them twice with no problems. They are have a great website, are quick to ship, stock everything on the planet, and have really low prices. I couldn't find you review from the link you posted. What probably happened is that you got two bad video cards in a row and they wouldn't pay for shipping to them to return them. They won't-most places won't. They will pay return shipping from them to you.

sMoKiE-OEM doesn't mean used. It means "plain packaged". It is new, but doesn't come in a full-color retail box. Sometimes the software bundle or other included items is less. In some cases (such as processors) there is less of a warranty or only the store's warranty. In this case, that doesn't apply. OEM products were originally meant for computer builders to purchase-obviously they don't need fancy boxes for each component that's going into a box, but end users buy them all the time. OEM memory will just come plain (hopefully wrapped in an anti-static bag or something similiar), as opposed to a small clear plastic box with a label on it. Other than that, it's the same stuff, and is brand new, with full lifetime warranty.

so Tazman, your "hirschma" on reseller raitings? I'm sorry about your experience. They might have been testing the card out before they sent you a new one. Just to make sure you didn't void the warrenty. I dunno. Still, I've bought 4 computers worth of parts from them with nary a problem cept I made the stupid choice to let the 2nd PC made with their parts be put together by a newb. He fried the CPU, memory and mobo...twice...Both times even though it was his fault they replaced it ALL with not a question! I was EXTREMLY impressed! I'm one of those people that swears by them

I am sorry for your experience though. That can leave a bad taste in anyones mouth.

Geotpf - The reason you can't see my reveiw is that each time someone does an eval on NewEgg (or any other retailer) it gets pushed back. Last I checked it was on page 29.

Bob - I didn't have a chance to void the warranty - just defective out of the box. Times 2.

For the benefit of doubt, I haven't RMA'ed it but sent them yet another 3 page email with the thought that maybe they will try to make things right. We'll see.

Back to the subject, sMoKiE, Geotpf gave a very good description of what OEM is. To add to it, as a builder, as stated, I don't need fancy packageing just the hardware, etc. You save a bundle buying OEM for name brand components. The only time I sway from the OEM thing now is buying a CPU (I'm strictly AMD). I chipped a die twice putting on heatsinks without using shims and spent a month figuring out what the hell happened - by that time the 30-day warranty was out - though I doubt any site would cover my bad install of a heatsink.
