UPS recommendations

Been hearing lots of people around me who have been getting power surges and losing lots of hardware lately and it has led me to cough up and buy a ups.

What should I look at. I have a 480 want PS in the pc so I should go at least more than that right? I need to power the pc, monitor and a couple of peripherals.

Any companies I should avoid?

thanks
mike

UPS selector will give you an idea how much power you will need APC

Amazon sometimes has deals on UPS

What kind of peripherals do you have? It is not reccomended to plug in a laser printer into a UPS

Like thekemp said APC is good quality

Yep. APC is the best. Mine is a Conext, which is basically APC's "economy" brand. It looks almost exactly like an APC, (very slight differences in the plastic front bezel) and came with APC software. And so far seems to work as well as a "genuine" APC.

frequent powercuts forced me to consider getting a UPS. waiting to receive a BELKIN 800VA UPS ordered at ebay. my ps is 350 watts but i also have a 19in. monitor that draws 125 watts. APC seems to be the best brand but i choose BELKIN because of the price. APC and BELKIN help you to determine the VA rated UPS you should get. a 1200VA system was the miniminum rated UPS that i should use according to APC and BELKIN. forum sites said that 650VA should do the job. i therefore settled for the BELKIN 800VA. http://www.belkin.com

I agree that APC is the best, but you certainly have to pay for that.

I now have one of the Belkin 1.2kVA models. It has worked well and comes with very generous guarantees.

I got a Belkin 1200VA from shopharmony.com
They also have a 1000VA for $99
However, they are VERY slow on shipping. Mine came direct from Belkin, so I bet they don't carry these in inventory.

I got this CyberPower one from Bestbuy and it has been through 8 --count 'em 8-- power outages ranging from 2 hours to a few minutes. It isn't the best model, only gives like 16 minutes with a 16" monitor, but I bought it for well under $100 and that was a year ago. I just went to BestBuy and saw the newer models there. They look promising. And they give you $35,000 is your computer fries from a surge!
