help with MB and CPu

Hey all please I need opinions as I am so sick of my computer and it's problems which what it has shouldn;t give a prooblem at all..
I seem to always by the worst motherboard or one with alot of problems... I always stayed on AMD'S side but I will cross over if need to..

ASUS A7v333
1Gb PC 2700
XP 1700 CPU
Chaintek Geforce 4MX
Had Abit Geforce 4 but the fan has died
WD 60 and 80GB drives
Lite on dvd
40X12X32 liteon cdrw
only other thing in it is a realtek network card...
windows Xp

no matter how many times i reinstall Windows it is just slow as hell lags big time...
reboots constantly...
I have tried all the different drivers..
Before this I had Abit board which died so I decided to get teh newest one and go back with ASUS... Which I gave my wife my old A7V133 which now looks like the best board so far as far as running and no problems...

I am wanting to change now and need opinions.
I like the A7V333 because it has Usb 2.0 and firewire intergrated sound and network is fine..
for the combo which can be either AMD or Intell I do not care at this point!!!!
Like to stay around $300.00 to $400.00 on the combo of Cpu and MB...

also since i have now 1 GB of DDR 2700 that would be nice to use that also...

Please i do not post on here alot just read you helpfull posts ..But I am in desperate of opinions as I can not afford to go with my opinion again...

Thanks
David M

Two things that pop out of my mind are:
- memory test using memtest86 (memtest86.com - free)
- power supply rating (300W+???)
If memory is defective or if the power supply unit is unable to drive the devices, you might get into these problems.

As screen has suggested look into what maybe causing the problem before you toss your system as it seems to be a good rig. Try the system with just mobo, cpu, video card and one stck of ram to see if it will run. Then if possible try different sticks of your ram, a different cpu, video card and mobo to identify what is the problem.
If you are still going to upgrade the only things you would need to change would be a new cpu (Amd 2200+) and the video card, the G4 mx sucks get the G4 ti or a radeon 9700 (if you have money to burn). But test your current system.

Have you checked those Hard Drives? Are you one hundred percent sure one of them isn't bad?

I had a similar bootup problem with monster lag under a Maxtor/XP 1900+/Abit KX7-333R. Was cussing out the MB, Ram, and processor.

Turned out the Maxtor was to blame. It arrived in shoddy condition from the factory. If these are OEM drives you're working with, you especially want to double-check them. I'd especially check that master drive w/ your OS on it.

Ok first thing I would check would be the powersupply. If you only have a 230 or 250W powersupply get a new one something like 300 or 350W the higher the better but make sure you get a good brand. Check out www.tomshardware.com and check out there ratings of several powersupplies it should give you some ideas. Also RAM would be the next hardware piece I would check if you can borrow another stick of ram from someone else and try it in your system to see if you issues go away or get less. Next I would try the OS what version of Windows are you running? If you are running 98 or 95 especially you might just be due for a format and reload. 95 and 98 are not that stable over a long period of time. I alway keep an image of my harddrive just the way it was when I had my system freashly loaded with all my apps installed and everything running smooth. That way I can just re-dump my image back onto the drive and it will be back to that running smooth state. I just have to backup data and maybe re-install a few games and apps that werent on the system when I made the image. Finally I hate chaintec never tried their vid cards but their motherboards suck big time. Also why did you go out and by a brand new Ge4 when all that was wrong was bad fan on the Abit one. Just by a new fan and replace the old one. Would have been cheaper I think.

well if you have 1GB of RAM PC2700 DDR I'd say go with this:

ECS P4S5A/DX
Intel Pentium 4 2.5Ghz (g)
TOTAL $335.95 assembled

thats priced from MWave.com from their motherboard bundles. for $9 they actually assemble the processor and motherboard so you don't have to mess with it. the ECS P4 S5A/DX board is very reliable, I use it to build all of my P4 systems. And I use the K7S5A board for all Athlon builds. ECS is a great and reliable mobo company. if I were you thats what I'd go with! good luck.

I see no reason for this he already has a good system I don't think that he needs to trash everything and start over something small is amiss and can be fixed or replaced with little effort and cost.

don't you find it coinsidental that he has an AMD system and he's having stability problems? Hummm... it probably can be fixed. But in the future I'd say go with Intel, they run cooler, more stable ect. And please lets not crap the poor guy's thread. PM me if you wanna start a Intel vs. AMD war ;-)

P.S. - You said if he had a 230 or 250W PS he'd need to get a new one, did you see that he posted that he has a 400W + Antec PS? Just thought I'd draw that to your attention.

New fans are cheap. Get a metric ruler and measure how many millimeters wide your fan is. Then go here and see if you can't find one that's about the same size.

Edit: Here's another good place to look for a fan for your vid card.
