Thanks, Mike:
I think I owe Dad at least that small tribute. When my Mom wanted to redecorate and buy all new curtains and drapes a few years back, he thought they were outrageously expensive, so he
studied how they were made and sewn, and made his own from scratch - and they look like they're professionally made!
His skills were born out of necessity, because a lot of folks from that post-war era couldn't afford to pay for third-party services.
I remember he and I pulling an automatic transmission out of a car,(no transmission jack!), propping it up in a garbage can, and repairing/rebuilding the thing!
He added on a kitchen/den addition to our old house - foundation to roof all by himself - even hand-cut and built all of the kitchen cabinets from sheets of birchwood that he bought. They looked great - as good as any cabinet maker.(And all he had was hand saws and one circular saw!).
I imagine that there were quite a few guys from that era who had developed all of those types of skills. Hopefully, just a little of that spirit has rubbed off on me! (Maybe that's how I got interested in building/troubleshooting PCs!).
He's just now getting into PCs, since I built one for him. When I was down there for Christmas, I installed PC Anywhere as a Host computer, and just installed it on my PC as the Remote, so hopefully, I can control his PC from mine. Haven't made connection yet ; we'll see how that goes.
Also want to get into videoconferencing, since I only see my folks two weeks a year - and "time is of the essence" as they say. Time with them is so very precious. . .
