Boo Staples! Yeah Conext!
I bought a "Conext CNB 300 UPS" November 13th, 2001 from Staples that it turns out was manufactured in March of 2000! Of course I was using it to an extreme degree, but it still should not have failed. The Relay to switch back from battery power stopped switching.
Anyway Conext is mailing me a new one and asked that I mail the old one back. They are sending the new one today. So should I bother sending the old one back? It will cost at least a few dollars to send.

Since they have offered to send you a new one, and requested that you simply send the old one back, I'd say the least you could do was honor their wishes. You're coming out ahead on the deal for little more than shipping costs.
That, and though they didn't say so, they may charge/bill you for the new one if they don't receive the old defective one back.
Just choose a cheap, but trackable, method for sending it back to them.....like UPS ground or something.

You never know how old things are when you buy them; they sometimes sit in warehouses for amazingly long periods of time. Usually it doesn't matter, except for things like UPS's or printer cartridges that have a certain shelf life. Of course, things like video cards and CPUs get obsolete quickly, but things like speakers, power supplies, keyboards, mice, UPS's, etc can potentially sit around for years and years.

Speaking of ink -- why is it that only HP puts the date on the box? Everyone else puts a code that store employee's can't decipher.
I have to agree with Geotpf, many stores will rotate stock if there is a date on the box. Conext doesn't put a date on the outside of the box, so how do you know? I don't see this as a Staples problem per se. Now, that I've said that, the rotation should start at the manufacturer, then the warehouse, and finally the store. One lazy employee, or one employee that doesn't know better or wasn't properly trained, anywhere in the line of things can cause the "out of date" problem when the date is on the box. (Or even if the date isn't on the box!)

Talk about when things were manufactured and sold, I had a part
break on my Weedeater blower/leaf vac that I won in a contest from one of my suppliers in the spring/2002 like maybe May. Called Weedeater about a replacement part, they have a 2 yr parts and labor warranty.I didn't get a receipt from my supplier when I won it. Well turns out according to Weedeater, that by the serial# it's out of warranty. Trying to get info from my supplier now on date of contest so I can get a date of win/purchase.

Planned obsolescence.
I "bought"--actually free after rebate--a program called Streets USA, 2001 Version. It doesn't even show my own neighborhood, which has been here 15 years. But what can I do, send it back?

I'd say continued stellar service like that is worth "at least a few dollars", wouldn't you?

Well it arrived today and they actually sent me a 500va to replace the 300va. So back it goes. Atleast this way the battery gets recycled.
Gotta give it to Conext though a liitle here. This "new" one is from the last week of the year 2000, so it is even older than the one from Staples.
What is the cheapest way to send it? USPS second class?
