Speaker choice

I'm thinking of getting the Logitech z-540s, they seem to be about perfect for me price and performance wise, but I also noticed the Creative Inspire 4.1s are at a pretty low price for what I thought were about the same speakers, and the 5.1s are cheaper than I thought too, yet still higher than the z-540s. So mainly, I just want to know how much of a difference there is between the z-540 and the inspire 4.1s, and also how much better the 5.1s are, as in are they worth the extra $$$ for a student on a budget

well i use the z-540's and a friend of mine uses the inspire 4.1s. IMO my z-540's sound a lot cleaner and have a better sound over all the frequencies. also the sub is tuned a little better on teh z540's. i really like ym speakers but his are lackluster. i would recommend the z540s. also a note on 5.1: if you game a lot, 4.1 is actually more desirable than a 5.1 system because games were not ment to use 5.1 (at least until doom III comes out), and so they just blend the front left and right speaker and put it through the center channel, which actually hurts the positional sound because you hear right sounds in your left ear and vice versa.

I agree with originel,(I almost always do!). Go with the Z-540's.
It seems to me that neither Creative nor altec have kept pace w/
the speaker market of late. They both used to be excellent, now,
it seems, they are just "good", IMHO. . .

And don't forget the new z640's

Linky

They're identical to the 540's except in 5.1 sound as far as I can tell.

Logitech Z-340s for $24.99 (no MIR)

Just got my Office Max Sneak Preview of upcoming Sunday's ad.
There's a $25 Instant savings on the Z-340 3-piece speakers.
For the money you can't beat these speakers. This is an in-store
deal only.

I printed out the list as recommended via the e-mail notification,
and brought it to the store today. The "associate" didn't have a
clue, but the Mgr. did, and she even went brought out the two
sets that I eventually purchased. 9 Plus I had just received a
$10 off $50 coupon, so I wound up with a pretty sweet speaker deal. Best part was - no MIRs!!

If you have an unprotected system and are in need of a 1214
joule surge supressor, Office Max also has the $30 retail
Belkin Surgemaster II ( 8 outlet ) supressor for $10 after the
$20 Instant savings.
