Aftermarket RAM in Dell?

Has anyone installed aftermarket (brand name, not generic) RAM in a Dell computer? After getting manhandled by their "customer service" over them shipping the wrong part, I want to buy elsewhere.

Also, is it safe to mix Dell RAM and aftermarket RAM? From what I've heard, Dell just relabels other manufacturer's RAM anyway.

Michael

I would think it wouldn't matter.

From what I was told most of the brand name RAM you see in retail stores are repackers. Those people repack them into blister packs to sell to retail stores like Best Buy , CompUSA & Microcenter. I have purchased the same Branded package of RAM and had no two alike (not at the same time, just when I would upgrade the RAM every 6 months or so.

Hi Senator, Welcome to TechIMO!!!

I've installed Kingston RAM in several Dell Dimension 4100 Systems at work with no problems at all. I don't like to mix RAM brands although it will work.

Yeah, I just took a closer look at the RAM currently installed in my Dell. It's Samsung with a big Dell sticker slapped over the Samsung logo. I found Samsung memory online for about half the price of the Dell price, so Dell can kiss my ass now.

Also, does anyone know how to tell if RAM is ECC or non-ECC? I called Dell and they told me that it was non-ECC but that was after about 15 minutes of the tech guy looking up the answer and he didn't sound altogether convincing. There's nothing on the modules themselves to tell me.

Copied straight from the FAQ at the www.mushkin.com .

(If you already have a PC and are unsure which type you have, count the number of small, black, IC chips mounted on one of your existing DIMMs. If the number of chips is evenly divisible by three, then you have ECC. If the number of chips is NOT evenly divisible by three, you have non-ECC memory)

I got a 128-MB stick at CompUSA (free after rebate, which eventually came). Have had no problems. It had a lifetime warranty, so I figured it was no risk.

Dell, as Emachines, Compaq, and Hewlett Packard only builds the computer, almost always with generic parts. I haven't heard that aftermarket memory had conflict with any of these brands

-but be careful with power supplies... HP uses special ones.

assuming your get the right type of memory, it shouldn't matter if it comes in a dell box or not.

I added 256mb sticks of Crucial ram to 5 different Dell PC's and haven't had a single issue with any of them.
