Newegg.com CPU question

Hi,

I've purchased AMD Athlon XP 1800+ retail process from newegg.com few days back. Today I received the processor. The retail package came in a opened and re-sealed (with glue) plastic package.

Shouldn't the retail package of AMD be in a completely sealed form?

I contacted newegg.com 1-800 customer service number, and the customer service representative on phone told me that they cut-open the package to get the processor serial number.

I don't know if I should believe them or not. Does anyone have similar experience from Newegg.com? Do you think it is a refurbished item? Should I ask for RMA number and ask them to send another sealed package?

I would appreciate a response from a large newegg.com customer base on this forum.

Update 9/4/2002
-------------------------------
This information is mainly for people who are ordering a retail Athlon XP cpu (or any other AMD cpu retail package) for the first time.

Newegg.com promptly replaced the processor within two business days. The replaced package had the same features as the first package i.e., it looked like someone opened the package and put it back with a glue. However, when I went to CompUSA to check the AMD retail packaging, I observed that "AMD packaging looks like an opened package that was put together with a glue", which is exactly what I received from newegg.com. Newegg.com sent me a correct item the first time. However, some service representatives at newegg.com could not understand what I talked about.

I think I'll buy again from newegg.com. The fault was mainly due to my ignorance (YES it is very true), some misinformation from the newegg customer service representative, and BAD packaging by AMD.

I would trust Newegg. They have always been very open about what is refurbished, I see no reason for them to lie. Many people covet certain model steppings, hence Newegg responds to the demand by finding out what they have in the box and selling those steppings separate.

For what's it worth, the last two AMD 2100+ MP retail processors I bought came in undisturbed packaging.

I have never had any trouble from NewEgg and do not have any reason to doubt them.

I'd definitely ask for a different one.....I just ordered a retail pack AMD from them last week & it came sealed. Some sales rep is trying to feed you a line of hooey to prevent an RMA>

I've also bought a couple of retail XP chips from newegg and they always came sealed. If the contents are complete and everything looks good (straight pins, complete packing materials, etc.) I wouldn't make a fuss...not worth the hassel. If on the other hand the package is not complete and the cpu looks tampered with I'd raise heck....

If its resealed w/ glue, its probably a CPU someone RMAed before... it maybe not be broken, but its probably not new... that's just what I'm thinking though...

All retail-boxed CPUs that I've purchased from Newegg were
all factory sealed. . .

Don't worry about it. I've order thousands of dollars worth of computer parts from Newegg. The only problems I had were that once a Crystal Orb went out of stock and they called me to ask what they wanted me to have them do about it and another time I had to RMA a stick of RAM. No questions asked, just a free replacement.

Thousands of dollars worth of stuff with two screwups is good to me. I feel bad calling them screwups...

Probably somebody returned one after realizing it wouldn't fit into their socket 5 mobo... Or their V1.2 Abit KT7A-RAID...
