What's wrong with this?
Ok, so I saw this on TV (one of those coin things) and basically its a 1933 Double Eagle Clad coin... to make it in regular terms... its a $20 Pure Gold coin that's made shiny like a mirror... Now they're selling it for $19.95 here plus shipping and handling. Now I don't collect coins much, but a $20 gold coin for $19.95 + s/h sounds interesting. I looked at some information on it, and it was allegedly never produced, when it actually was... and the Treasury was gonna melt them but it was contested... so now they're selling it... and if I'm not mistaken, its technically legal tender... although I don't think most people would spend a $20 gold coin... So what's with this deal? I know that "As seen on TV" isn't a good company, but the link they gave on TV is www.NCMint.com... which goes to www.1800webmall.com... It'd be a nice coin to have... assuming its really pure gold (as it says it is) and that i'll actually get it...

| Better Buisness Bureau might have some info on this buisness. I don't see how a $20 coin could sell for less than it's worth. Unless the gold is really heavy, and shipping comes to like $10, then they would make 5-8 bucks on each, that sounds about right.
From a collector point of view, it wqould be nice to have, just because of what it is, and in a few years it will eventually exceed the price you have to pay now, hopefully.
Would you get it, prolly, as much stuff as there is from as seen on tv, yeah I'd say they'll send it,they may not be a great company, but they have been around a while. People that don't get what they pay for don't let that kind of buisness stay running for long. Timely might be another issue entirely
That's my .02 cents

It sounds like gold plated base-metal coin, nothing more.
That's why it sells for $20...they're probably making AT LEAST a $15 profit.
The ad is one of the usually deceptively/ambiguously-written ads often used to make people think they're getting one thing and then -- after sending in the money -- getting something else. It looks defensible in court if anyone complains, however, so if you get this item, be aware that you're really just getting a pretty "historic" paperweight.

I got one of the Sept.11 coins from this company for my dad for christmas. It was just a 2001 silver dollar that was well painted and sold for $19.95. I was pleased with it and so was he. Took about 4wks to bill my credit card and I got it the next week.
As for this gold coin I agree w/ JCD. I read the article about that $7.6 million 1933 $20 gold piece on CNN. The reason it sold for that much was because it was the ONLY one still in existence from a certian mint or something.(they left that out part on the website) but they do say it's a proof. Not sure what proof means though, I'm not a coin collector.

Hrmmmmm... I'm starting to agree w/ JCD... but its not unthinkable that the coin is real. It DOES say an unknown amount was stolen... and at 1 oz. of gold each coin, its not unthinkable for one more more people to cart off a few thousand... Thanks for the link fortysomething, but do you or anyone else know if its possible to contact the U.S. Minto to ask them about this specific deal?

These are not original coins! NO WAY will you get a gold coin -- of ANY US denomination -- for $20. Besides, gold goes for how much per ounce at the moment?
They are just newly made -- probably gold plated (and maybe not even plated in 24K gold) coins to "commemorate," if you will, the real historical coins that if available today, would sell for many thousands of dollars each, perhaps hundreds of thousands of dollars each depending on how many of them were found.
According the the text, only one was saved from meltdown, hence it's 7+ million dollar value.
There are no others except these base-metal "reproductions."

| "Clad" likely means "plated" Quote: |
The edition is limited to 2,250 worldwide
| That means it's a copy of the coin produced for "collectors" (well those average american coin collectors, not the actual collectors)
As ING direct likes to say, Save your money!
