CPU on Sager Laptop

i'm planning to buy a Sager 5620

and its going to be custom build with a 1.6GHz CPU

i'm planning to upgrade the CPU to a 2.2GHz CPU in the future.

i was wondering what do i need to know before upgrading to a newer CPU. will desktop (478pins) CPU will be acceptable? Is it easy installation on the new CPU?

Thank you.

Welcome to TechIMO!

As for your question, take this with a grain of salt (I build AMD systems ). As far as I understand, the P4 1.6GHz pins are different than the P4 2.2GHz Northwood( ). If I am incorrect in my assumption, another member will correct me soon enough .

The main reason I am replying is that upgrading a laptop CPU is not a small feat. I purchased a Sager NP8560 PIII 1GHz in January and sold it last week. The laptop was awesome and didn't have a problem with it and will be ordering up the 8880
this week. You may want to spend the extra $200 for the 2GHz model that can take an upgrade. I'm assuming that Sager is fazing out the sub-1.8GHz models / motherboards.

I will tell you as I do all of my customers looking to buy laptops. When shopping for a laptop, REALLY concider price/needs/budget and purchase the laptop with the most options that your wallet can handle as the aren't easily upgraded other than memory and you want to keep the resale value in mind also.

Hope that helps some .

Mike

From what I can tell, the P4 comes in a couple of flavors - a 423 pin chip and the 478 pin array. The 423 pin is the first generation of P4's (me thinks) and the 478 pin is the latest.

The reason behind the pin package change is to electrically accommodate future Pentium 4 processors. Customers looking to upgrade their systems beyond 2 GHz should strongly consider purchasing a system that supports the 478-pin package.
from the Intel site. For more info check it out HERE .

That's the reason (along with the expense) that I have stayed with AMD system builds for two years now. I would be assuming that Sager is using a 423 pin desktop chip in the 5620 which WILL support another P4 2GHz 423 pin chip and that's it. The newer 478's will support on upwards of the current 2.53GHz processor that Intel has out - but they'll probably change that again next week .

Hope that helps.
