Warning about Newegg's "Refurbished" items.
Newegg has been my vendor of choice for new computer parts for some time; but I've been having some experiences with them lately which leave a sour taste in my mouth. As many of you are probably aware, Newegg has an extensive selection of so-called "refurbished" products in addition to new items. Here is a statement from Newegg's refurbished section:
"Refurbished products are products that contain components that have been owned by other clients and returned to NewEgg.com. The products are refurbished, tested and sold considerably under cost"
Now I don't know about you, but "refurbished" to me indicates that a product has either been tested as good or repaired to a working condition, giving the buyer a reasonable expectation of receiving working merchandise. This is definitely NOT the case with Newegg; their "refurbished" items are usually customer returns which have NOT been tested or repaired in any way! Here are some of my "refurb" purchases to back that statement up:
1 MSI 6215T barebones system; had 2 previous Newegg RMA numbers on the outside of the box. The machine still had a sticky note left on it by a previous buyer stating that the mouse & network ports were non-functional. Upon testing, I discovered that his diagnosis had been correct.
2. Samsung 52x CDROM drive; had 2 overlayed Newegg refurb part numbers indicating a probable previous refurb sale. Drive sounded like a manual transmission going bad.....obviously thoroughly tested and repaired.
3. AMD Thunderbird 1.33Ghz; Arrived with so much thermal paste on it that it looked like a square cupcake with white frosting on it...processor was DOA. Again, obviously thoroughly tested and repaired by Newegg.
4. Abit NV7-133R; came in the original box WITHOUT a static bag; a handful of loose screws and standoffs mixed in with it. I cringed when I saw this one....as expected, it was DOA.
I don't know what's worse; their misleading and possibly fraudulent behavior, or my stupidity
