Might add http://www.9software.com/

I have to disagree with John C on one thing he said ...

Quote-->I do my homework, too, but I'm no expert, and I haven't yet found an expert in these forums, either.

I have to disagree, I have found many experts in this forum. I have sometimes posted questions at work in the morning, and had the answer to the problem and finished the computer that day. So Im not sure what type of "experts" were being referred to, but I have found many experts of all sorts here.

JP

PS..as far as the thread, Ive done most of my business with (in no order) Newegg, CompGeeks, Staples, OfficeMax,Dell, #9software, Outpost.com (1 order), compuplus (1 order), Nexthardwareshop (1 order) and to be honest, I havnt had a bad experience yet.

I should note I haven't done business with everybody I listed; mostly, I just listed the top vendors on Reseller Ratings, plus little bits of info from these boards and here and there. I have personally used (on-line) Office Max, Dell, Newegg, Multiwave, Computer Geeks, Amazon.com, and a couple others that are either too specialized to list (ShopMatrox) or have insufficent/leaning negative data (Enet Marketing), or basically no longer exist (Shopping.com, which I used back in 1999), plus Staples, Best Buy, Circuit City, CompUSA, Office Max, Office Depot, and PC Club B&M's. And I have never been ripped off by any of the above, although a few I have had minor issues with.

As #9software, I still haven't been able to figure out if they are 100% on the up-and-up. I'm leaning towards yes, but the fact that there are reports that they sell CD keys without COAs, plus CD's with CD Keys just written on pieces of paper, make me think twice about this vendor. I started a thread awhile back that basically went round in circles with nobody knowing whether or not they were purely legit one way or the other.

I've helped hundreds of people re: computers (and several other subject areas) -- mostly online in various newsgroups and discussion forums -- but sorry, that doesn't make me an expert. Or anyone else.

We have different definitions of the term...mine's more demanding.

I just ordered yet another piece-mail system, and ya know who shipped their order first? Jazz-Technology. Though that was a bit surprising [considering I never order from a company under 8.5, but it was a minor part that could be easily snagged locally]. I also see that Essential Computers has quite the reputation for excellence.

As for the BAD in NewEgg, I don't mind the lack of technical support, pre or post, but the fact that they "hand pick" their product reviews/comments worries me. I can understand wanting to limit the negative reviews of a product since so many folks attempt to get into this field with no real knowledge of what's involved. Just take a look around, and you'll read posts of people who already ordered their parts, and are trying to get answers to questions that should have been answered well before their purchase. But in attempting to remove this unwarranted negative posting, many professionals, such as myself, will not be heard, no matter how knowledgable their remarks may be. On an added remark, however, I think this has been brought to NewEgg's attention, as they seem to be attempting to let some of the more warranted problems remain for review.

And I consider myself a professional, even by the literal meaning of the word. Up until a year ago, I was mostly hobbiest, or ameteur [for a good 4+ years]. But now I repair, upgrade, and custom engineer microcomputer systems as a second job in what little spare time I have between my day job and night school.

{EDiT}

Oh, expert was the word. Well, I can say I'm almost an expert so long as you don't expect an expert to be able to troubleshoot vague problem descriptions from afar. I can't remember the last time there was a problem with a PC I couldn't fix in good time [unless of course, the corruption was severe, and Windows required a fresh install, in which no such thing as "good time" exists ]. But I will admit, there's plenty more to learn. But as I get there, these trivial minor problems with PC's will no longer be of much interest, as a true expert will prefer the REAL toys. So what is your "more demanding" definition of an expert, mr?

And Monday I will get to play with those cute little flex boards...they're almost exactly what I was looking for in the PCMOD forum. They should make an excellent TV-top-multimedia system. Of course, the AGP-slot version will make it more complete, allowing TIVO like operations, but the prototype needs to be of budget.

I agree with your list except for 1 retailer: OfficeMax
these guys have completely fallen flat since around Thankgiving this year. I was having a lot of luck with coupons and rebates from them but suddenly the rebates are becoming a maga hassle with them. I just received another denial with no reason listed. With all the copies I have I now face the dreaded task of trying my money out of them. Its becoming a hassle I no longer need.

My local store is a complete joke. The staff is/has been rude for a year now, no one knows where anything is and even the first person in the door on sale day is told they are sold out of the advertised items. Look at the RR rating for them. It will probably tick down as you read. They are falling faster than any one I have ever followed.

NewEgg and MWave both are great, I had a lot of luck with Minotaur Technologies when I was doing PIII systems and overclocking, glad to see they are still top flight. I must admit I have really done well with ComputerGeeks on the stuff I have gotten from them. I have gotten several systems (HP refubs, etc) from them that I have installed in a local school and all are holding up well. Keep an eye out for deals at Staples. I really like their store locally and they always email me a $30 of $150 at least every 2 weeks. Stack it with some rebates and you can do really well. They have never turned down one of my rebates either. I know others probably haven't been as fortunate with them but I do ok there.
