Tiger Direct mining for identity theft info?

I posted the following one-star review of Tiger Direct and a curious practice.
10/29/09 10:54 AM
"I ordered a camera and lens from Tigerdirect. I used a credit card. The card is legit, as was my home address. I received a return call from Tigerdirect asking me to call for 'Customer Verification'. I called and was asked to provide a copy of my driver's license and a copy of a recent utility bill, as well as a third personally identifying item which escapes me.
I have purchased many items with a price over $1000 via other sites and have not been asked for such information.
I am very disappointed by such a request and I hope Tigerdirect understands that they lost a significant sale."

The merchant did contact me and tried to explain that asking for personal identifying information...driver's license number and utility bill... was for my benefit! Jose was his name and he identified himself as the credit card manager. He told me that this information would confirm my address and keep a neighbor from stealing my merchandise!
I feel strongly about identity theft and I am very suspicious that this may have been an attempt to gain such information so as to steal my identity...they had my credit card number and were asking for an ID with a photo on it and a utility bill...and use that information for other means.
I did make a purchase of the same item via another vendor which was quite willing to let my credit card provider and the delivery service supply the necessary security.

Well shucks. Next time I find/steal your credit card, I'll be sure and not shop at Tiger Direct.
