Buying a EIDE Laptop hard drive

I need to find two laptop hard drives for older systems. One should be between 60-80G and the second no more than 160G. Reading reviews is confusing. Should I consider a Western Digital or Seagate and from which supplier. If I am correct, Newegg only sells OEM's and I want a retail version for the warranty Thanks for the input.

So far my searches only come up with OEM. Who sells retail online? Local stores have nothing smaller than a 320G

I had looked at those but again all are OEM's. With my luck, I'd fall into the category of those reviewers who had their units die before the first year or shortly after so I need the company warranty.

Sorry, Vol....I did not know they are so hard to find...

Hear is one NIB...Only one year warranty and only 5400 RPM....

Western Digital Scorpio 160GB SATA/150 5400RPM 8MB 2.5" Hard Drive (Retail Box) WESTERN DIGITAL TECH.INC WD1600BEVSRTL

I do think you will find any NIB, with such small capacity of 60g retail...

I didn't know they were going to be so hard to find either. Wanting something no larger than 160, 120 or 80 being better, makes it almost impossible. When you add in the need for an EIDE not SATA, it's like they don't exist. Thanks for trying though.

Volunteer,

I know you're probably looking for an oem drive from a retailer, but I've had very good luck picking up 7200rpm(Hitachi) drives from E-Bay. Just make sure to buy them from someone who will guarantee the drive will not arrive doa, and possibly at least a 30 day warranty. The last two I purchased were 80gb's. Very fast little drives for older machines. I think I've upgraded about 8 or 9 of these for friends/family in the last year and a half - all still going strong.

I'll also mention, I still have my older notebook(Compaq 2010US) that I'm using to learn Ubuntu, after maxing out the ram, you can usually upgrade the cpu too. A lot of these came with celeron processors and you can put a Pentium mobile in these as well. Really speeds things up. I went from a 1.3ghz Celeron to a Pentium M 1.6ghz. There really is no comparison for the speed difference, it was like night and day.

Best,

Liquid Cool
