Water Distiller Owners? Need advice

For years we used countertop water distillers made here in the US and they lasted a very long time (5-6 years) The last two we have had the misfortune to purchase couldn't make it to year two. All the online retailers CLAIM they have the best product and best warranty but it looks like they are really all selling the same unit, just light cosmetic changes. One has a lot of refurbs for sale which makes me question their quality. If you purchased a countertop water distiller ( these days almost mandatory for all households) what brand did you choose, price range, and how old is it ?

May I ask why you would use a water distiller instead of a carbon filter solution or at most an osmosis purifier?

Carbon filters do not remove the particular chemicals that exist in our water. Reverse osmosis works just about as well as distillation but is expensive to maintain. I solved my problem though. I took the electric distiller apart, and using just the stainless steel bottom, turned it into a stove top distiller. Works great and certainly cheaper than the stove top units I've seen for sale.
