I use PayPal, So I'm safe right?

Wrong.
Although paypal will help you out more than other forms of payment. you can still get scammed very easily without getting your money back. How? Heres how it works.

Scenario A
You pay ABC Electronics for a camera that cost $200. ABC Electronics receives the money and never sends you anything. You then file a dispute and will win and you will get your money back if ABC Electronics has $200 in their account.

When people try to scam others, Usually the goal is to make money. There would be no other point to take someones money and then just let it get reversed. Which is why the scenario above is very unlikely.

Scenario B
You pay ABC Electronics $200 for a Camera, ABC never sends the camera then you file a complaint. You win the complaint with paypal, but then are informed that ABC's account has $0 in it because they cashed out before you disputed the charge. So even though you win the dispute, you are still out $200.

Scenario C
You use your credit card via paypal to send ABC electronics $200. You then realize ABC has scammed you. Now after this DO NOT file a complaint with paypal. Instead file a "Charge Back" with your credit card. Once you do so, you should receive a refund within a week. A lot of banks do this much faster, some even within 12 business hours.

Why do a charge back instead of a dispute?
  • Chargebacks are resolved in days, not weeks and your bank actually has customer service
  • You bank is much more likely to side with you than paypal.
  • You receive you money back regardless of what the seller has in their account.

Just though i would point this out as i have seen way to many times a customer assume that since they are using paypal that they are safe. This just isn't the case. In fact it is much easier for a scammer to get away with your money by paypal than any other electronic commerce payment types (Credit card, e-Bank Draft, m-payments) How ever, if you use you credit card, you should have no problems at all.

Fiber, Delighted to have you hear..

Excellent thread, Fiber!! I have never used Gaypal and frankly do not know what is so good about it...

How does it replace a credit card order, unless one has none...I view Gaypal as nothing more than an interloper...

It is a good tool if someone is a merchant, but as a buyer, well I would have to say no...

It can replace a credit card if you have funds in it. A lot of people use paypal to send each other money with the funds already in their account instead of using a credit card. This is were the risk lies.

You are not safe. I just went through a Charge back with PayPal & Discover Card. Even though it was defective merchandise I was denied my charge back by both PayPal and Discover. Both PayPal & Discover Card Suck!

You're much safer just paying by credit card. A) You're only liable for up to $50 in fraud charges if someone steals your card number and B) If you need to get a refund but a merchant won't comply, or a merchant sends you the wrong item or a broken item and won't do anything about it, one call to your CC company will start an investigation that is 9 times out of 10 resolved in the consumer's favor resulting in a full refund to you. If you pay via credit card at Paypal, you can get this protection too, by disputing the charge direct with your CC company, but if you pay with your paypal account balance, IMO Paypal is MUCH more protective of the merchant than credit card companies.

Sellers complain too...

Sadly, the Selling side of the equation screams about getting scammed by the buyers and PayPal rarely will side with the seller.

The latest is that a seller ships the merchandise and then the buyer claims that it is not what the seller described or advertised. The 'buyer' will then file a complaint and the seller will ask the buyer to ship the item back. 'Buyer' ships back a package, but it will contain a rock, or paper, or ??? The buyer then has 'proof' that a package was sent back. The seller contacts PayPal about the non-receipt of the merchandise, but the buyer has a confirmed delivery, so the seller loses the dispute. No regard for what is really going on, not sure if the customer dis-service folks are even reading the correspondence from the seller. Even when the shipment to the buyer is 9 lbs and the return shipment is 1 lb. No one at PayPal will even stop to think that something wierd is happening, just rule in favor of the buyer and move on to the next dispute.
