Shipping cost commensurate with item cost

We know that shipping costs must go up like everything else. My pet peeve though is that the shipping charges seem to have little to do with the item cost. I was looking for some cables which I can't find locally. The cable was only 2.99 at NewEgg but they wanted 12.82 shipping! I think I'll pass on that. Are there any companies left that charge shipping dependent upon the cost of the item and size/weight?

Maybe the small mom n pop stores...The ones where they don't have a fortune tied up in inventory and an expensive system etc...Mom grabs item off self that she's standing next too and pops weighs it and mails it

But I do feel you pain....Then again - if you need the item and can't find it anywhere, 12.95 is a small price to pay.

I do a lot of shipping and I don't seem to understand the question.
When you are finding the price of an item, the price is the item price PLUS the shipping cost.
Or you could buy locally and pick it up. Circuit City????
Some companies sell their items with free shipping. Amazon??? NewEgg???

What could the cost of an item have to do with the cost to ship it?
Shipping cost is based on packing, weight and distance.

It has NOTHING to do with the amount you pay for the item.

A diamond ring costing $10,000 could ship for $10.

A stereo receiver costing $10 could cost $50 to ship.

Where is the relation between item cost and shipping?????

I would love to hear the answer.

sportyinc - the shipping cost of a hard drive at NewEgg is 8.55 and weighs a lot more then a cable that they are charging 12.82 to ship.

I remember pricing a 32" LCD with Provantage, with it having one of the lowest price, until I calculated shipping at $160.oo for 32 pounds....
