How cheap?
Min. RAM requirement?
Min. HD size?
128, 256 or 512 video card?

A little more info as to what your needs are and what you are using it for and I bet you could get some better advice

well heres what i want as to what i need is different.

ram at least a 512 chip and a 256 chip ddr2 preferably
dual core processor amd preferably
60 gig or higher no more than 80 should do
dedicated video card with 128 mb ram.
windows xp or xp pro

uses surfing the web, transfering in a game, play misic if possiable. playing the game and messengers and like this forum. would be used on a wireless network also. I have been looking at prices all i find are over 1000. and to be honest for 1000 i can build one heck of a desktop.

Want it portable? Want it small? FORK OVER THE CASH!

Pretty hard to find what you want under 1k, here are a few I found:
http://www.cyberpowerpc.com/
http://www.vigorgaming.com/

so far both have systems for about $1100 when config with xp pro

amd seems to run higher than intel systems.

Like you said, you can build a pretty darn nice desktop for the price of a so-so notebook.

Then again I am an avid gamer so a $3500 desktop turns into a 7k+ laptop one I configured was closer to 10k and hubby said... ok I am too much of a lady to actually repeat those words!

I also noticed about the only few systems out there that you can configure with win xp pro are gaming notebooks

For under $1,000 with a discrete video card with even 256MB will be pretty tough, but PowerNotebooks.com offers XP on all of its laptops...or no OS at all if you would want that.

The Sager NP2090 and the PowerPro A 9:6 would be the least expensive way to go at just over $1,000.

Toshiba Satellite P205-S6267 at Circuit City for $799 if you have a store with one in stock. They go for $1100+ most every place else and have 2GB of ram. Vista Home Premium though, but for the price, you can buy XP for it. Or you can download MS Virtual PC for free and run XP on Vista.
