Hey, usapatriot, I made my last purchase based on your recommendations on another review site. I chose Abe's to make this purchase without first consulting this site which was a mistake. I can only chalk that up to a case of gadget lust which clouded my thinking. Long story short, I got the same high pressure sales tactics everyone else gets. I also got the wrong lens. It was a cheaper substitute and not what I ordered but my CC was charged the full price. I'm livid. I haven't posted a review here yet because I am going to call and try to get an RMA to resolve. We'll see how that goes. Thanks for the honest discussion.

Hard-Sell and fast-talking scared me off...

A great price on the Nikon D60 package with two VR lenses attracted me. I also included a promotion code "FRIEND10" for an extra $10 off. Despite reading about how they require you to call to "confirm" your order, and instead try to sell you extra things, I placed my order thinking I would just say "no".

When calling them, the guy introduces himself as the Nikon "specialist" at Abe's. He initially tries selling me an extra battery and says the battery that comes with the camera only lasts 30 minutes (which I know to be a lie) and I really should get the extra one, which lasts for 2 hrs, for only $50 extra. I say "no".

Then, he says that I really should get a UV filter to protect the lenses for $19.99 each. I said, "No".

Then, he asked if I would want to upgrade the free 4GB memory card for only $25 to a Transcend 4 GB class 6 card. And, here's my mistake...I said, "yes". He says, "Thank you very much, your total comes to $814" and we hung up. But, after doing the math, the total should have been $779 + 25= 804. Not $814. So, I called him back and he told me the invoice I had showing the $779 price was wrong, because you can't get the free memory card and get the $10 off. Only one discount can be applied and he said he would not honor the invoice price. That is where I got upset and said Abe's was trying to scam me. He said, to make me happy, he would throw in a camera bag for free, which I did not want. I said I would accept a UV filter instead of the bag. He says, "great, your total is $824, thank you very much, goodbye". Somehow, the total went up another $10, instead of coming down.

Finally, I called back again and told him I wanted to cancel the order if he would not honor the original invoice price of 779. He said, "ok, I'll give you the camera, lenses and the upgraded memory card for $804." After we hung up, I thought about all the quick talking and deceptions and decided it was not worth saving $75 to buy the equipment from Abe's. The question I asked myself was, if I had a problem with this camera, would I want to deal with this type of guy again and would they stand by their product? Also, do I trust that the product I am getting is not refurbished or grey-market??

As I read from another "Abe's" reviewer, I decided to run from Abe's of Maine, (currently located in New Jersey). I also called my credit card company to make sure nothing was charged AND even had them send me a credit card with all different numbers, just in case some unscrupulous guy from Abe's ever tried using my card.

I will purchase my Nikon from a local store and pay slightly more for peace of mind.

Very Pleased with Abe's of Maine

I ordered an Olympus 570 camera on the 24th of June, It was delivered on the 1st of July with no problems. I used the free shipping, which is 7 to 12 business days and 8 days is spot on. The camera has the all of the factory included items and the US warranty. They were the lowest price and I would not hesitate to order from them again.

I ordered a projector from them. I called twice looking for a tracking number. Both times they told me it had shipped on the 19th(ordered the 16th, not bad) and they would call me back with tracking info. They never followed up on a tracking number. I called today to find out why I haven't gotten my projector after 10 business days. They said they would call me back in an hour. Guess what, I called them back after 2 hours. I come to find out that the order was never passed on to Mitsubishi. They charged my account and told me it had shipped previously but had never actually placed my order! I cancelled because I was not about to wait 10 more business days (2 weeks) again. I just hope they refund my account in a reasonable time.

Sheesh

I bought a 42" Panasonic plasma from Abes in May, received it about 17 days later and had a very good experience. The $ 1,457. was accurate, shipping included and the upsell to the warranty, cables etc. fell on deaf ears.
The sales people were courteous and helpful. I paid with my Amex card and
this is by far the best way to go. Lots of recourse from Amex if you're not
treated fairly.
Best Buy wanted $ 1,699. + $ 85. delivery and agreed to take $ 100. off the price "if I bought it right now". They say they're not on commission but tried to nail me down and I walked away. Abe's beat them by about $ 225.
and got my business.
I was a little apprehensive after reading some comments here but I'm a satisfied customer. Moneytalked, and BestBuy walked!!

I totally agree. I just ordered a cookware set from Abes of Maine. It arrived broken, so I called to return it. I was finally connected with a customer service rep who told me, "we don't really DO returns". I told him that was odd because I had just read the return policy, and there was nothing stated about no returns for cookware.

"Exactly," he said. "We don't have a return policy for cookware. You'll need to contact the manufacturer."

RIDICULOUS! Die Abes, Die!

Abe's of Maine is hopeless

Ordered a receiver on 17 Oct; got a "we're processing your order" email back.

No new info on 18th, 19th or 20th (Mon) so I check the Abe's of Maine web site, nothing there, and check my credit card account, no charge there.

Send Abe's about ten emails to CANCEL the ORDER; no response. Called and put on hold.

Monday, 21 Oct, the charge appeared on my CC account. Immediately stopped the transaction and sent about ten emails DO NOT SHIP. No response; calling Customer Service goes on hold.

Tuesday, 22 Oct. box appears on front porch. I had specified SHIP WITH SIGNATURE REQUIRED. Immediately sent several emails that their box, which was damaged in shipment, had been dumped on my porch and they should pick it up. I did not sign for it and did not own it.

Eventually, 23 Oct, David the VP calls and we discuss the sequence of events. He agrees to take it back. Many emails followed over a few days. UPS left one note on door.

Cut to the chase: box was picked up today, 29 Oct. I'm still working on getting the credit processed.

I won't be back at Abe's anytime soon.

I was truly lucky to have found this place before ordering my camera. They tried to swindle me at first, but I was very happy with the eventual outcome.

They are religious Jews...no business hours after 3p.pm friday, or saturday....good luck
