If you shop online check your credit card carefully. If you have other cardholders on your credit card then check even more carefully. The past few months I noticed a charge from WLI*RESERVATIONREWARDS.CO for $9.00. I assumed it was something charged by my spouse. Turns out it wasn't.
These folks
WLI Reservation Rewards (owned by WebLoyalty.com) are, in my opinion, Class A thieves. They either buy your credit card number from online resellers or have an arrangement to get it automatically when you purchase something online (sometimes via the shopping cart). Then they quietly start charging your card every month or every other month and hope that either you don't notice or that you attribute it to your spouse or something like that. Multiply that by thousands of people and pretty soon they're rolling in the dough!
When I finally figured out that it wasn't my spouse I called these crooks and spoke to a "Sonji". She claimed that I clicked on a coupon and then entered my email twice to subscribe to a free trial and then they sent two confirmation emails and a notice that they were going to be charging my card. It's all hogwash. I never subscribe to free trials of anything. I don't use coupons and don't go looking for coupons. All popups are blocked because I use Firefox. I never received any of their so-called "confirmation emails" and (I do scan all the mail in my Junk folder before deleting). I categorically denied all of it and let "Sonji" know that I would be talking to both the police and to the BBB. She hurriedly offered to refund what they had charged. It makes sense for them doesn't it? They probably have maybe 10% of everyone they're scamming who realize what's going on and call to ask for their money back and they figure that if they give the money back maybe they won't rock their luxury boat.
Anyway, it's not just WLI Reservation Rewards - it's apparently lots of other outfits. If you see charges such as:
WLI*SHOPPERDISCOUNT
MASTERMONEY DB
VISTAPRINTRWRDS
SHOPPINGESSENTIALS
or other such charges then you should start hunting down the origin of these charges.
Here are some forums and blogs that expose the scam in more depth:
