I've shopped quite a bit from Amazon.com, and have had nothing but good things to say about it. They have shipped my orders swiftly as long as it wasn't ordered at night/week end.
I currently have two orders.

1: Ordered in stock item 03.26.06. The status was "Item not yet shipped" until 03.29.06. Then "Items shipping soon". Today, 03.30.06 it's status is still "Items shipping soon".

2: Ordered 2 in stock items 03.27.06. Current status: "Items not yet shipped".

5 days from ordering, and nothing shipped yet is not good! Of course I choose "Free shipping", but they haven't "punished" me for that before

Anyone else sharing my alarming experience

Once. I ordered a Nikon digital camera from them. Along with it I ordered the Nikon batteries and recharger kit. The camera came right away. The batteries and recharger kit were listed as "Coming in stock soon" when I ordered them. I ordered them in mid-September. They came just before Halloween. Everything else has been very fast and I buy from them all the time. Like, mine, probably an isolated incident.

They kind of restructured their shipping policies. If you notice they give you a date now when they estimate to ship. Most of the time it will go out before that. My guess they are trying to get people to join the Amazon Prime program. 79.00 dollars a year free 2 day shipping.

When you place an order, we will estimate shipping and delivery dates for you based on the availability of your items and the shipping options you choose. Shipping date estimates will appear in the order form. After placing your order, you will see both shipping and delivery date estimates in the order confirmation e-mail and in the order summary in Your Account.

Yeah, seems like they've changed a bit. Although in retrospect, I believe it's been a combination of that and slow update of the inventory. And the fact that the items I ordered was in high demand. (The Elder Scrolls; Oblivion. Game and book in separate shipments.)
At the time I ordered, both items showed "Availability: Usually ships within 24 hours."
I don't know when this changed to "Usually ships within #of days", but it did for both orders.
I was really puzzled when I checked the status of my orders, and nothing was happening. Of course, the fact that they didn't have the items in stock explains a lot.
Guess the moral is that "Availability" might be inaccurate for items in high demand.
Amazon.com still scores high with me though

For the record; First order arrived after 9 days, second after 10 days if it shows up today
