Thanks, all, for the suggestions; they help a lot. I really like to shop on the web and I only want to buy ethically obtained goods for an honestly advertised fair price. I've learned a lesson at least about camera buying and will proceed with caution.

Hello all!

There is more info on thecamerapros.com here:

An excellent list of retailer recommendations is kept here:

If you want a true horror story, check this link:
http://thomashawk.com/2005/11/pricer...nd-switch.html

Just bought my first thing from B&H, a 1 Gb Lexar 80x CF card for $99 which is a good price as it is, but with the $30 rebate from Lexar it is a steal!

Hope that helps!

Frank

Great post. Thanx

I have bought numerous times from the following vendors, some with returns and have had outstanding results from each.

Like JerryP says there are many good online vendors besides B&H, and most of them would offer deals if you are patient enough. I am looking for a Rebel XTi (body) for more than 2 weeks and while big names like B&H and J&R are keeping their prices at the MSRP level; newegg, zipzoomfly and buydig have posted discounts. CircuitCity gives you a $50 gift card if you spend more than $499, and you can use it to reduce your cost (in store only; expires tomorow). DELL is a good source for cameras too if you look for coupons.
Living in New York, I am not a fan of B&H or J&R because I have to pay taxes, and they only offer discounts on old models. Don't forget Amazon, but you have to visit them at least once a day to catch a deal.

A scam all the way

I ordered from them about a month ago because they had the cheapest deal on a camcorder I wanted. I normally order from Buy.com, J&R, ecost or newegg. I should have stayed with these retailers. Here's my recent letter to the BBB.

Quote:
This company is a complete and total scam. I found that they had the camcorder I wanted at the lowest price on the net ($459). I purchased it via their website and then got an email asking that I call in for verification. No problem...I can do that. While on the call, I'm asked if I want to purchase a battery and battery charger. No, not an extra battery or battery charger...just a battery and battery charger. WTF!!! No where on the website did it say that these weren't included in the purchase. Who purchases a camera without the battery and charger....what a scam. The guy on the phone tells me it will be $65 for the battery and battery charger. I agreed because I don't want to deal with the hassle of finding another vendor. This should make the total cost of the camera about $530 (it had free shipping). They process the order but never tell me a total or send me a receipt via email. Then 3 days later I check on my credit card and they've charged me $772.72!!! HOLY SHIZZLE!!! They had charged me almost $350 to get a battery (not a special one just the default) and battery charger for a camera that should have come with them right out of the box at no extra charge. When I call to report what I thought was a mistake they tell me that I was charged for the 'upgrade package' they sent me. Since when did the battery and charger necessary to make an electronic product work become an upgrade? And since when does it cost over $300 for these products. Making the thing even more strange is that they actually offer upgrade packages online that include all sorts of extras (battery, tripod, case, UV lens, etc) for MUCH less than what they charged me to just get a battery and charger. The customer service rep I spoke with didn't even see how illogical and nonsensical this was. I'm returning the product today and will be doing a credit card chargeback for the 10% restocking fee they said they will be charging me.

Same story happened to me with camerapros.com about a month ago. When I called to confirm they asked me if I wanted the battery and charger for an additional $350 and I said no thanks just give me the camera. They told me that was fine and got off the phone. I then checked my email and had an email from them saying that the camera is no longer in stock. I called them up and they told me that they canceled my order. I paid for this order with my capitalone card that I never use and this was the first time this year I have used it. Yesterday I received a phone call from capitalone about fraud detection. They alerted me to the fact that someone maxed out my card buying various things from the internet. They even created a fedex account in my name. So stay the hell away from camerapros.com. This kind of stuff should not be allowed to continue happening. Is there any place to report this kind of activity?
