19" monitor

Hello Good Folks,

I am looking to purchase a 19" flat screen monitor.

I am so confused over the number of manufacturers. Some screens, like from a good company like NEC or Viewsonic have only a 4 star rating, whereas some unknown cos have 5 stars.

I am also unfamiliar with the specs that are most important in purchasing one of these.

This is a gift for my son's 17th birthday and will be in his dorm.(He is at a residential high school) Are any models more fragile???
Oh, and price range is up to 350 total, inc S&H.

Thanks to all for any insight, advice, and information!!!!!

Sweet.......
