John,

Many DVD movies include PC software for playing the DVD on your computer. Try a handful of different DVD's and I'll bet that you'll see an InterActual player pop up on one of 'em. Try Spider-Man 1.

The software can be installed on your computer. I'm not sure if the player will install a codec if you don't have it on your system.

If there's any problem, log on to the internet and the player may search for a video codec.

Thanks PC_Fanatic. What's the difference between the DVD Decoder and a Codec or are they the same thing? WinDVD wants $70 for their's.

A DVD player has to:

1) decrypt the encrypted DVD

2) decompress the video and audio tracks

If a video codec (compressor/decompressor) isn't installed on the system, the player can't play DVD's or MPEG video files.

Some DVD players include the proper codecs, some don't (such as Windows Media player)

I've been there. Everytime I reinstall my system, the DVD player is the first casualty. Luckily, my ATI installation CD has a DVD player, complete with the necessary codecs.

I remembered seeing the InterActual player on several DVD's. It might just work.

There are some freeware programs available. Download VideoLan.

It's a work-in-progress, but still pretty good.
