Xp mobile 2400+ or sempron 3100+

ok so in another post I was trying to decide whether or not to go with A soyo MB. Well thanks to everyone's post I have moved onto another decision.
I decided to go with a gigabyte Mb as I like the whole Gigaraid option for up to 8 ide devices. Now their are 2 I can choose to go with.
one a socket A: http://www.newegg.com/app/viewproduc...128-199&DEPA=1

the other socket 754:http://www.newegg.com/app/viewproduc...128-241&DEPA=1

I'm trying to stick around $200 and so I am stuck with choosing which processor I want to go with.
I like the OClockin options I could have with the xp mobile 2400+ and I like the 512k l2cache : http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduc...103-400&depa=1

but if i go wtih the Sempron 3100+ I will have my foot in the door on the 64 bit scene, but dislike the 256k l2 cache: http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduc...104-214&depa=1

However i am just unsure if i want to throw down $124 on a restricted chip. meanwhile with the xp mobile Oem, i will have to buy a heatsink to throw on it.

Let me know what you think and thanks again for coming along with me on my long and winding thought process.
J

Well to start off the Sempron has no 64bit capabilities. It is only based on the Athlon 64 line of chips and does have the onboard memory controller but it will not do the 64bit thing.(you might have known that... you'll be able to upgrade if needed in the future anyways.)

Second. Read this review.

We should note that the Sempron 3100+ processor delivers good performance even without overclocking. Having only 256 kilobytes of L2 cache memory, it is just 1-2% slower than the full-featured Athlon 64 2800+. Of course, the lack of AMD64 technology may disappoint some users, but this technology is not very important today – 64-bit operating systems and applications are not widespread, and the competitor desktop processors hasn’t yet acquired a similar technology yet.

As for the gain you receive by overclocking the Sempron 3100+, we enjoyed a performance growth of about 25% by clocking our sample at 2.52GHz (40% frequency boost). Thanks to that, the overclocked Sempron 3100+ could outperform the Pentium 4 3.4GHz as well as the Athlon 64 3400+ by about 5% in average.
If you are planning at all on overclocking get the Sempron 3100+. They did those tests with a subpar Heatsink and they still got it to average 5% faster than a P4 3.4Ghz not bad if you ask me.

If you were to do this you would need a mobo with an Nforce3 250GB chipset because of the AGP/PCI bus locks.

Now for my recommedation. Get the OEM version of the Sempron Chip @ Newegg.com for $100. Spend the rest of your budget for a good cooler.

Well thanks to everyone who helped me with this decision. I appreciate it tremendously. For some reason though, NewEgg's prices on the sempron 3100+ OEM IS $126 AND THE RETAIL IS $124. now I guess i'll have to wait till it drops to $100 next month.
Unless someone knows where I can get it now for that price?
Thanks

All the Online megastores are retailing the 3100+ berween $122-$124.
This chip is an outstanding overclocker.

BTW- Have you taken a look ay the Chaintech 754 Nf3 250GB?
It has provided many members at www.sharkyforums.com stellar performance and great overclocking options.

Wow, That's a price jump. When I checked it the OEM was right @ $100. I wonder if demad has jumped that much or if there was a pricing mistake.

Seems unlikely 3 different stores would list mistakes...probably as more people are finding out how well this cpu OC'S that demand is going up.
