Motherboard choices

Our office manager needs a new pc. The budget has to be under 1100. We chose Envision Computer as they were recommended. However when it comes to choosing a motherboard, I don't know what to choose. Onboard sound, video, etc. is acceptable as long as they can be disabled in the future. Envsion also has an inexpensive prebilt that has an ASUS A7V 8X-MX Should we consider that purchase? This computer will not be a gaming machine, need medium video capability, and nice sound.

An excellent office-manager grade system can be had for approx. $500-600. The basis would be an Abit VA-10 motherboard and a Duron 1600 processor. I'd be glad to spec it out for you.
. And I could build it for you or you could have it done locally.

I don't believe the ASUS board mentioned was one of Envision's choices. They do have a Athlon XP, no monitor, for 499 which is appealing. It has the ASUS A7V8X-MX board which I am unfamiliar with.

There is nothing wrong with the Asus A7V except that it is old technology. It has the Via KT133 chipset which is class of 1999-2000. Certainly you can do better with something newer if you want to go with a Via based motherboard. The current chipsets are the KT600, KT800, or KT880 and will take the new OS's drivers(i.e. Windows XP, 2K) much better than an antique going in.
Also, if you go with integrated graphics you can get a fine system for far less the the $1,100 you budget. For up to date technology try:

or better known:

Either will build a great machine for you well within you budget.

Monarchcomputer.com (near Atlanta) is another company with a high ResellerRating than will build up a custom system from whaterver parts you choose (in their inventory) for a low integration charge.
