Processor help

Can someone please help me with this question? Which is the difference and which is better? An Intel Celeron processor that operates at 2.8 ghz or a Pentuim 4 processors that operates at 2.8 or an AMD athlon that operates at 2.8ghz? Thanks for your help..

Well there is no such thing as an AMD CPU that operates a 2.8Ghz, at least at stock speeds. 2800+ is the model that runs at 2.1Ghz and is a general comparison to Intels P4 processing power in Ghz.

But a 2.8 Pentium 4 blows your other suggestions out of the water. There is no competition between those. That being said the AMD Athlon 2800+ costs a whole lot less ( i haven't check prices but I'd say a good $100 less) and gives you a great, high quality, fast CPU that is best suited for gaming among other things.

lol, ALL P4s are better than Celerons. a celeron is a cheap model that doesnt give you much performance, and is only good in say...... office machines, or basic computers that you dont need a lot of intense cpu work done. Ghz speed has NOTHING to do with how fast your PC is gonna be when comparing different brands, models, etc. in my opinion the AthlonXP is your best bet. it will give you the performance and value like no other. yes the P4 2.8Ghz is a bit better than the 2800+, but the best is the 3200+ with the 400 fsb. that will blow every other P4 out of the competition (exept those new extreme editions lol)

I can agree that the AthlonXP is a good choice(AMD is all I'll run ever again unless there are drastic price shifts) But the 2.8c P4 can keep up with an AthlonXP 3200+ and even beat it in a select few benchmarks. A 3.2Ghz P4 has no competitor in the AthlonXP series. You have to bump up to the Athlon64 to find equal competitors. The normal AthlonXP rating was made to compete with the P4 A and B versions with 400FSB and 533FSB. They simply can't compete with the C (northwood) and E (prescott) cores. Even a 3.0Ghz C or E will easily beat the 3200+.

Thats why the higher P4's are usually compared to the low end Athlon 64s. They are pretty much on the same level (except for the the 64bit support of course).

Finance Intel...

I would go for a Intel CPU. I have been in the industry for 7 years and have seen a lot of issues with non-Intel CPU's. The Intel one's just work more eror-free.

Hope that helps.

Re: Intel...

I've been doing this since the Tandy TRS-80 was called a "computer".. Seen a lot of mess come and go. Intel DOES run smoother in factory built systems, I give them that much. The reason? They build them CHEAP.
Come on... Admit it. If a system is built PROPERLY the AMD will keep up with the Intel and even surpass it some. Error-free? NO SYSTEM is COMPLETELY ERROR-FREE... You know that.
Intel does have the advantage of moving memory faster. A long long time ago Intel had the advantage of a stronger FPU by a large margin(AMD K5,K6,K6-2), remember that?
But today's Athlon XP and the new 64 are more in line with Intel's offerings. Intel has their hands full competing with AMD now. In the past it was a simple choice... INTEL. Now AMD is a viable opponent.

Just buy the CPU you can afford, or the system that offers you the most for your dollar.
