Laptops and Good Brands

I've been through these forums plenty of times in the last year or so, only posted a couple times though.

Anyway, I'm going off to college in August, and I need to find a good laptop under 1400$. Preferably with at least 512MB RAM, a 20GB HD, 56k Modem, LAN, and Wireless, CD-RW (Don't care if it plays DVD's or not... that's why I have a DVD player), a Radeon 9600, and a processor that's going to be at LEAST 2.4GHz (Unless it's a Centrino, then 1.6 would be the min.) Mind you, those are the minimum requirements that I want.

I know, a lot to ask for for under 1400, but I've found a few...

I know the VAIO's are very reliable, my boss owns one and really likes it a lot.

This is my big question mark. I can't find ANY feedback on Averatec. Are they a generic brand? New? WHAT??? Can anyone give me any feedback on one of these things cuz that's a really good price, but I don't want to buy from them if they suck.

I've heard good things about Acer. It's just out of my price range, but I guess for the 9700 I'd pay the extra.

Finally, I know nothing about Fujitsu. Are they nice? You guys got any other suggestions for things?

Any feedback is appreciated.

Thanks guys!

I thought it was quite easy to find a system with the min specs you want for under $1400. I just bought my laptop last month, and the only systems that where consistenly over that amount where the centrino's. I would NOT recomend Sony VAIO's of any type, they overcharge quite badly on most their systems. Check out Circuit City they always run systems with rebates (mine had $450 in rebates) and they have 0% financing if eligable.
