I believe they use ceramique heads in their burners that aren't supposed to wear out as soon as an average burner, especially their scsi burning cd burners that are geared towards burning massivily and lasting longer. You could end up with a good deal like a lite-on and be happy with it and have it give you your moneys worth.
Plextor has always been an inovator in their drives and are usually known for burning fast and error free. Other companys are too(yahama is a good example), plextor is known for their reliability as well.
I have had three plextors so far and must say I enjoy them, not often do I find myself getting any problems when burning, i keep the lens cleaned often and all three drives I own now run great and I use them still. You usually get what you pay for, I found my plextors have lasted and really proven themselves.
I have a plextor 12x10x32a, plextor 40x12x40a, plextor 708a. I would buy plextor again for sure. However it depends on if you can spare the extra cash for a drive, right now cd roms aren't getting faster, so having a nice one would be a good idea.
Plextors premium drive has a nice encryption system for password protection and support for larger cd's. However I havent seen much at all going on for larger cd support.
The thing to worry about next is in dvd burners is dual layered support and newer formats like blu-ray that hold an insane ammount per disk. However I am not sure when this might be something that will come up for awhile. If you are looking at a dvd burner, it is just something to consider if the time is right.
