PLEXTOR "Premium" : Is it Worth It ?

I've noticed that just about anything made by Plextor commands a higher price than it's counterpart by type (DVD burner etc.) or Specs of other brands.

Why is that so ?

Is it justified ?
Or just "prestige pricing" ?

I believe they use ceramique heads in their burners that aren't supposed to wear out as soon as an average burner, especially their scsi burning cd burners that are geared towards burning massivily and lasting longer. You could end up with a good deal like a lite-on and be happy with it and have it give you your moneys worth.

Plextor has always been an inovator in their drives and are usually known for burning fast and error free. Other companys are too(yahama is a good example), plextor is known for their reliability as well.

I have had three plextors so far and must say I enjoy them, not often do I find myself getting any problems when burning, i keep the lens cleaned often and all three drives I own now run great and I use them still. You usually get what you pay for, I found my plextors have lasted and really proven themselves.
I have a plextor 12x10x32a, plextor 40x12x40a, plextor 708a. I would buy plextor again for sure. However it depends on if you can spare the extra cash for a drive, right now cd roms aren't getting faster, so having a nice one would be a good idea.
Plextors premium drive has a nice encryption system for password protection and support for larger cd's. However I havent seen much at all going on for larger cd support.

The thing to worry about next is in dvd burners is dual layered support and newer formats like blu-ray that hold an insane ammount per disk. However I am not sure when this might be something that will come up for awhile. If you are looking at a dvd burner, it is just something to consider if the time is right.

well, I for one don't think Plextor is worth the premium they charge anymore. I bought a Plextor 16x CD burner three years ago or so and paid twice what an equivalent Lite-On cost. The Plextor died just one month shy of the warranty expiration. I've had two Lite-Ons of my own since then and installed probably a dozen more for other folks, and never had a single problem.

When I bought a DVD burner, I didn't even consider Plextor due to the price premium.

YMMV

From what I've read Plextor delivers the fastest performance bar none. They will also probably be the first one to sell the SATA optical drive.

Their last CD-RW - the Premium - can fit a whopping gig of data onto a normal 700 megabyte CD! That's quite impressive!

I've had my Plextor 12/10/32s (scsi) over 3 years now and it's still burning and turning. Hasn't let me down once and I've really gotten my money's worth, IMO.

Socalgal hit the money right there. That's where I was basing my post from too.

Same here. I have two of those SCSI drives, and a 12/10/32A (IDE). I recently ordered a 52x burner from them (premium edition - 8 MB Cache ) for my brother. It kicks ass.

I also look forward to their upcoming SATA burners.

If I could afford it, I'd pay the higher price on a Plextor. Reviews and benchmarks alike, the Plextor brand outdoes its competition. However, I don't have money to pay for it, so I settle for a Lite-On.

Never had a problem with mine and paid big bucks when it first came out, in fact I had two lite-on's and the plextor and gave away one of my lite-on's cause the plextor has never gave me a problem!
