visit your local staples. some of them have a cendyne drive for about $60. it is only a +r/rw drive, but is still a dvd burner. I guess they can be firmware hacked to a dual format drive. haven't tried it though.

Is there any warranty on the Cendyne drive? It is bankrupted the last time I heard of it.
I bought two Cendyne CD-RW drives and two Verbatim CD-RW drives from last January to May from OfficeMax. One Cendyne drive and one Verbatim drive was dead the first time was used. I didn't install the Cendyne drive right away so I could not return them to OfficeMax. And I would not bother to send the Cendyne drive to have it fixed.
I gave the Verbatim drive to my nephew as a gift and he emailed Verbatim for the warranty. He got no response from them.

I forget who, but I guess there is some company that bought them and they are going to take over all the warranty issues, if I remember correctly.

I have one of the drives though, and it is a rebadged nec-1100. It is a great drive and has given me no trouble at all. For $60 you can't really go wrong for a dvd writer drive.

I wouldn't buy anything before you've checked with DVDRHelp, who have user reviews of dozens of DVD burners.

Personally, I would never buy a no-name burner just to save a few bucks. You'll end up wasting more money on coasters than you saved buying the drive. There are a few brands worth considering, Pioneer, Lite-On, Plextor, NEC.

As far as vendors go, AccuPC, Livewarehouse, and Newegg are well regarded vendors with competitive prices.
