One more comment/question: WHY IS GOOGLE STILL SPONSORING EXPRESS CAMERA AS A LINK??? THAT WOULD BE A WONDERFUL QUESTION TO ASK SOMEONE FROM GOOGLE...

Google doesnt sponsor anyone. EC pays google an adsene/adword fee in return for advertising. If Google tried to block everyone who was thought to be scamming, theyd go bankrupt.

That being said, I honestly hope these ExpressCamera people get a$$ raped by monkeys for what they are doing to people. The stories here enrage me and make me sick.

They act like you're the dumbest person on earth and try to sell 50 other things to you. It's like they're TRYING to give to worst service in the world! thank you everyone on this who warned me before there was no going back

Wish I had seen this thread before

I wanted to switch over to digital and was in the market for the Canon 5D. Another photographer forwarded me an email from a friend who said that Express Camera was selling the 5D for $999. WOW! So as a typical photographer looking for the best deal, I placed an order online. I was left messages on all my phones, saying that I needed to 'confirm' my order by phone with them. After waiting forever on hold, my salesman asked if I wanted the plastic body or the magnesium. I wanted the magnesium. He said, "How about refurbished camera that is really not refurbished? There was a company that went out of business and had to send back their Canon cameras. When Canon receives that, they have to, by law, put on stickers that say 'refurbished'." I told him, I don't want those. Give me new ones, because I am not comfortable with accepting ones with stickers. He said he understood. (Wish I had been as intelligent as one of the earlier posters who recorded the conversation) I also wanted a Canon 70-200 IS lens and he said, "Why do you want that one? The Sigma lens is a much better lens." and I said, "I would never buy a lens that I haven't tried out yet. Would you buy a car over the phone?" and he dropped that. Then he moved on to telling me that there was this 'new' 70-200 DIGITAL lens, and he was going to 'throw in' the hood and tripod collar. I said these weren't extras. (Honesly, if I had been paying attention to my internal warning system, I would have hung up by this point) I, too, was given the lines, "You need this", "Surely you want that" and by the time is was all said and done, the price was $7640! Holy cow, I thought I was only going to spend a couple thousand on two bodies. I asked him to break this down and I called him back because frankly, I felt raped and changed the order to just two cameras. He said okay, and my out the door price was $4763.93. I thought, well, these are supposed to be brand new, so this should be okay.
Unfortunately, they did not accept American Express (and after reading every page of this thread, I know why), and so charged $1500 on my MC and I had to pay a cashiers check for UPS COD for the balance. And do you know how they wanted the name to be on the check? "Photo". Again, another red flag. I should have been paying attention. So no, I have no recourse with my credit card company for most of it.
I received this on 4/4, I believe. Unfortunately, my father-in-law had died two days before and I could care less about the box. Today (4/17)was the day that we opened the box. Guess what? Both cameras have 'refurbished' stickers on them! I called them and again, after lengthy wait, was told by my salesman that I said clearly that I understood about the stickers. This is a flat out lie. I asked for my money back after he offered me a five year warranty for free and was forwarded to 'Customer Service'.
I was told the same thing by them, 'sorry, you're past the 7 days and besides, it's not a film camera, it's a digital'. No matter what I said, nothing made a difference. The only thing he could do to make this better was to send me an extended 5 year warranty on the cameras. Are they any good or are they for another country where I don't live? Are these cameras grey market? I have no idea. I said I would accept it since this was my only recourse, but have a feeling they are meaningless.
The camera (despite the stickers) appear brand new and have the plastic on the screen. But how hard would it be to put something like that on?
BTW, it was only the next week after ordering the cameras that I was at WPPI, and asked at the Canon booth about the 'digital' 70-200 and was told that this story was a crock. They only have two versions of this lens. Then I passed by the B&H booth and wished I hadn't been in such a rush to get a deal.
I have no idea if New Jersey will actually DO anything to these people. What if they decide to just disappear and reappear with a new name, new location and the same 'great' ethics? It won't be the first time.
I hope that as many people as possible find this thread and our words will make some impact.

ON and ON

I can't believe these crooks are still up-and-running. I have read all of the posts and have fallen victim to the bait and switch too. I hope they get what is coming to them soon.

It seems that they can afford to send some people the products they ordered but only after some pushy upselling and price markups. Then they probably buy refurbished equipment and try to sell it as new still coming out hundreds or thousands of dollars ahead. Imagine the number of people buying from this company on a daily basis? I would advise all of you to send complaints to The New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs in the link Nomaxim posted above. The squeaky wheel gets the grease. If we keep the pressure on them and fresh in their minds, hopefully something will get done. Its 5 months after the lawsuit was filed and they are still ripping people off.

I ordered a DVX100a from expresscameras.com and all seemed good. I received an email from them telling me that I had to call them to confirm my order.

SO I called them and was informed that the camera didnt come with a battery or charger and was being sold as a "body only" camera for those that already had a DVX100.

After telling Him what I thought of this. In a non caring voice as if they hear it all the time He said "So what do you want to do?"

Cancel the order I said and they hung up.

I immeditaly called my credit card company and was told Surprise "WE can not do anything till the charges have been made to the card"

I called express cameras back and as I read on the complaints page asked for David Goldstein. Now This might not mean anything BUT Goldstein sounds like a jewish name and the person on the phone sounded Indian/Arab accent.

After being on hold for about 10 minutes this man came on introduced himself as David Goldstein and in the same non careing voice just said that He would get the webpage updated to reflect the "body only" sales point on the camera and hung up.

I sent an Email to Panasonic to inform them of this buisness practice. Told them about how these people are selling the camera as pieces instead of the basic retail package as Panasonic sells it. I also asked them if there was anything they could do to not do buisness with them since they are misrepresenting the equipment and draging Panasonic along with their bad name.

As it happens I will be in New Jersey next week not to far from EdisonNJ where this place is. If I get the time and can get away I just might stop by and do a face to face.....

I should of listened and went to B&H in the first place.

Nick...........

Actually, I went down to their location in NJ and they work out of a 1 floor industrial park office building with very dark tinted windows. I got their "sigma lens scam" and went there directly to get my canon lenses or their was going to be trouble.

Follow up from AOE

In my earlier post, I wondered about the validity of the the 5 year extended warranty that Express Camera decided to give me. I really do remember asking who the warranty was through, and was assured that it was directly through Canon. Well, it's not. Why am I not surprised? I just received a box from "Photo", aka Express Camera, and it contained two warranties (I bought 2 Canon 5D's), plus two digital camera bags (very small) with two tiny tripods. The warranty is through RepairTech, which by sheer coincidence, is in New Jersey. I did a search on them, and got mixed reviews. http://photo.net/bboard/q-and-a-fetch-msg?msg_id=00A1fr
Apparently, the actual repair is usually acceptable, but you have to wait over an hour on the phone before you get to talk to someone. (It sounds like they only have 3 people who answer the phone) Would I send my 5D's to New Jersey from California after all of this deceit from people in New Jersey?
NO

More information

This site has dug up more info on Express's owners and a likely relationship to one of the Brooklyn groups of camera dealers:
