Is $140 a good deal for a new High Point 9mm w/ holster? It was on a flyer I saw for a local gun store and that's all the info it gave.

Well its too light to use as a boat anchor ....

Seriously, when you consider that most automatics start at $300-350 and go up from there you have to think about what you're getting for $140. If I remember correctly the High Point's have been sold under a half dozen different names and are unreliable and inaccurate. If I was going to get into a gunfight I might want my opponent to be armed with one.

If you're on limited budget and need/want a handgun pretty quickly, look for a used .38 special revolver. You can sometimes find a Colt, Ruger or Smith in that price range. Even an old Charter Arms will give you good service. These days wheel guns aren't "sexy" but they pretty much go bang every time and six shots will stop most fights. If not you need a shotgun! If you really want a 9mm auto save your pennies and look at a good one. I could name a half dozen brands and then offend somebody by not including their favorite, but I'd start by considering Taurus, Ruger, Smith and Wesson, or Glock among others.

High Point...CHEAP gun, but not BAD gun.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Well I just got back from the range; I was trying out my new High Point 9mm Compact.

First of all, let me say some of the things I read and heard are absolutely not true...

#1 It is not overly heavy or much larger than it's Glock, Sig etc. counterparts.

#2 It is not an ugly gun, LOL, in fact, it looks better than a Glock. Of course, that is personal preference.

Ok lets move on to my first impressions after receiving the weapon. I will not repeat what I have said above.

I opened up the box and was very surprised that the gun did not look cheap. Compared to my Glock 9mm, and say a... Jennings, it looked just as good or better.

I tried the action and trigger pull with some snap caps and all went smoothly. No jams or manual misfeeds, a good start. Trigger pull is a little heavy, but this not a 2 stage comp trigger.

At the range...

At 15 yards it did well against a human silhouette target. Groupings were loose, about 2" but we adjusted the rear site a little and 1 and 1/2 inch groups were easy to get.

50 rounds and still no misfires or misfeeds! We were getting good comments about the High Point from the others around us who could not believe the price. Most of them had never seen or heard of the High Point before. Those who had, knew the story’s and now where re-thinking there opinions (well… some of them anyway, lol).

100 rounds, still no problems even firing rapidly, the 8 round magazine (the cheapest feeling and looking magazine I have ever seen) preformed without any problems.

Well the gun and magazine seem dependable and rugged. I would consider it for conceal and carry, as it is not as big or heavy as people make it out to be. It has little recoil and is at least as accurate as my Glock.

The Good: Price $137.00 (or less). A lifetime warranty, even if second hand, great customer service, accurate and dependable, what more can be said?

The Bad: Cheap looking and feeling magazines. Lack of after market grips etc.

Well that’s it...

On a scale of 1 to 10 taking into account price, quality and real range experience; I would give the High Point 9mm compact an 8.

Don't be afraid to try one of these pistols out, they are nothing like the horror weapons they are made out to be because of the price.
