Intel is a mistake.

Even if you didn't go with a 64 bit solution, getting pentium would be a mistake, with a DFI NFII ULTRA Infinity or Lanparty and a mobile 2500+ you can go beyond 500mhz fsb and it will beat all p4 except ones overclocked to 4.4 ghz which is damn near impossible without vapochill or better. Just make sure you have some pc3200 memory with bh5 modules and you can keep 2-2-2 timings with 500mhz and higher. And it's many hundreds of dollars cheaper than the retarded p4 which gives lower performance.

I know this has been seen here before and way more than the 1500 budget but thought I would share again http://www.go-l.com/store/hardware/cinerama.htm
Pretty sweet.

they've shown that the opterons can outperform the xeons. A dual opteron system would probably be the best.

A good dual xeon gaming mobos cost about $400-$700 and the better proc's are over $1000, which I think is somewhat rediculus.

I agree. Anything Intel will be overpriced.

I'd go with either:

Intel 3.4Ghz Extreme Edition P4, 800Mhz FSB or plain 3.4Ghz 800Mhz FSB ($425)
Case of your choosing $150-ish
Asus P4C800 Deluxe $170
Mushkin Dual Pack 1GB (512MB x2) PC4000 $313
ATI FireGL 9800 ($760) or Radeon 9800XT ($445)
PCPower & Cooling TurboCool 510 Deluxe (expensive)
Four 74GB Western Digital Raptors in RAID 0 $912 total
Two 250GB Western Digital 8mb cache IDE drives in RAID 0 $428
SoundBlaster Audigy 2 ZS Platinum
Klipsch ProMedia Ultra 5.1 speak's
Plextor Premium CD burner
Sony 8x dual-format DVD burner
XP Pro

Give us some benchmarks if you build that thing! Sorry I'm in a hurry and can't give prices for everything, but that is the ultimate normal, gaming-oriented PC (read: non-specialized) I can conjure up at this moment.
