The computer being on 24/7 is a problem.

I had problems for a while with alot of empty pauses in voice calling one state over but they updated the firmware and I have not the problem anymore.

The device failed to install on a Dell computer with Windows XP but I have not tried to install it since the upgraded firmware. I can see a huge problem if 1 out of 3 computers it flat out will not work on... as in my case.

The one I use for my main line has problems where the username/password is corrupted or something on the devices internal drive and it will keep asking for the username/password unless I completely unplug the device, reboot and plug it back in. It may be a problem with the USB power failing or something after a long period of time or Windows XP failing after being on for a long period of time.

Still for practically free, it works fine for a home line for me. If you want a regular phone with voice mail and don't intend to use it much, it is a cheap way to do it and you don't need to have the device plugged in ever for the voice mail to work.

I would not expect great customer service or tech support from the company.

Their International call rates are too high, skype or rebtel.com is cheaper.

I would not use this device for business that is for sure.

There is a magicjack 3rd party help forum if you search Google.

I've been using Skype for years and the "By the call" service. When Circuit City when down, I found a Skype phone for $23.00 and have been using it for about 2 months. $30.00 for a phone # and $27.00 for a years service. Had minor problems. I am running on it's own computer (wired) but I've had it going thru my wireless laptop with no problems. I also bought a USB version for $30.00, in case the Linksys set up goes out. That's my story

P.S With the USB hook up, you use a regular old conventional phone.

Just a update from Post #10.
The current BBB Report gives this company a A- rating and the matter over the 30 day warranties has been resolved.
Quote:
Agency: Florida Attorney General
Description: On April 15, 2009 Attorney General Bill McCollum announced that his Economic Crimes Division has reached a settlement with a Palm Beach County business over allegations the company marketed a “free” 30-day trial for its long distance phone equipment, but actually charged and debited consumers during the trial. MagicJack, LP markets MagicJack a phone service product which connects a household phone to a computer, allowing consumers to make unlimited long distance calls over the internet.

The investigation into the company’s practices began in July 2008 after the Attorney General’s Office received numerous complaints about the supposed “free” trial. Consumers reported that although the company advertised the 30-day free trial offer, customers were allegedly still being billed during the trial period. The investigation further determined that the product had limitations which were not properly disclosed and that the company had a lack of sufficient customer service to address consumer complaints.

As part of the settlement, the company has agreed to implement various new practices to assist its customers, including a guarantee that all inquires will be responded to within 24 business hours and a disclaimer on the first page of its website clarifying the eligibility requirements to participate in a free trial offer. The company will also reimburse the state for the costs associated with the investigation and has fully resolved over 500 customer complaints. MagicJack, LP cooperated fully with the Attorney General’s investigation and has resolved over 500 consumer complaints since the investigation began.

Date of Action: 4/15/2009

The weakness of Magic Jack is that you need to connect it to a PC. Their competitor, Ooma, (Amazon.com: ooma Hub - VoIP Phone Device with No Monthly Phone Service Bills: Electronics) sells a one-time device that connects to your existing internet service. Ooma doesn't require a PC.
