Oh man, I absolutely agree
They're good for a few things, like networking equipment (usually only overpriced by 15% or so) and I'd often find myself stocking up on cabling or a router and cards whenever I had a big network job and didn't feel like swinging back at the office.
Their closing is bizarre though. ANYONE could have told them what they were doing wrong, yet they somehow failed to see it themselves:
the name is COMPusa, as in COMPUTER. People aren't going to Compusa to buy TVs or Cell phones. People that want to buy a video game for a console are more likely to buy it from a video game store or Best Buy.
They needed to tear all that junk out and pack those shelves to the gills with competitively priced motherboards, video cards, processors, RAM that's not locked behind a cage that only the manager can get to, etc.
I've had bad issues with MicroCenter, but most of their prices are spot on and aside from a dearth of good lower priced cases, they have a great selection of items as well and they'll keep getting my business.
I got spoiled over the years I lived in Las Vegas. There was a chain of gigantic electronics stores called "Fry's" in Nevada, California, Arizona, etc.
Good prices, BIGGEST selection I've ever seen and they had a coffee shop/cafe right in the middle. It was like walking into a geek's heaven
I reckon I'll keep watching Compusa though and checking their auctions (which I just recently found out about) to see if they knock down those prices a wee bit lower anytime soon
