Don't cost ya nuthin to bump it. Thanks!
I had already recommended to some folks to check this one out this week (lightning zapped modems, of course) as you can't beat F-A-R deals (except for Free Straight-up deals

). So I took my own advice as I like to keep a modem on hand for urgent repairs. They still had a big pile of them at my nearest store.
IAC, it has the Sterling Communications brand on it of which I know nothing. I was mistyping the URL so their web site actually works. Mine is their model S20-03D (there are at least two other versions of the S20 - the 03D and 03DF versions use the same driver file) and based on the SmartLink SL2800 chip (knowing these FBN packaging companies, it could be whatever the cheapest card was that they could get that week - there are at least two other similar models) so if it is SL2800 based, it should be an above average modem. It has voice (answering machine), fax (up to 14.4 kbps), and v.92 data (up to 56k bps) features. SmartLink (an Israeli company) has exited the modem chip market and there is a rumor that they sold that part of their business to Conexant - so if you want to try the Conexant unified HSF modem drivers, let me know how they work. I know there are Linux drivers out there for the SmartLink chips too.
Modemsite.com has the latest drivers known for Win (2005) but you have to pay to download drivers from there. Or you can offer them something they don't have to post and you can get free paid member time (or at least you could when I was last a "paying" member)
IAC, it should be a decent modem and all you could be out is sales tax and a little time if it isn't. One guy claims to have bought 10 of them and is making $18. on each after rebate. If you know the trick, please share...
Enjoy!
