That's an awesome deal thanks for the link. I might have to buy a couple and resell them.

If it were anything other than Maxtor I'd jump on that. Sweet deal for No rebates.

All of them were either OEM in prebuilts or over their piss poor one year warranty. It seems that disproportionate number of the computers I repair happen to have Maxtor HD. They do have their models that are less prone to dying, but I don't ever really see those too much.(obviously)

I suppose not bing able to get my personal drives replaced would sour me a bit as well, but I can just say I've never had a good experience with maxtor.

Anyways, I would think they are just clearing out the stock of Maxtor drives to make room for more Seagate(they recently bought maxtor) drives because I kinda doubt they'd be competing with two brand names.

you're not alone, bombled...i've had a number of large capacity maxtor's die on me early. the worst case was a 200gb drive that lasted less the 3 weeks! i steered clear of this deal too...a 1 yr warranty on the drive just isn't enough for me even if the price is nice.

DarkStar02...i've had them all replaced by maxtor under warranty but that's not the point. the point is that the drive shouldn't fail so often and besides, the data is more important to me than the drive. regularly backing up >160gb of files is a real bother...i'd just as soon buy a good drive (seagate) that won't die early on me.

i'd also point out that in all cases, the early failures were not caused by bad power (or power supplies) or heat.
