Update on the upgrade.
Got the Duron and SD Tuesday. Mobo arrived Friday.
Cool!
Got a s/h empty low profile tower case for $20.
So got all the bits. Started work at 2 this arvo.
1st, strip the 850 and mobo out of it's midi tower.
It can go in the short case, the 1.3 will need the extra space of a midi case.
Had a good look at the cheap short case.
No stand offs, no back metals, no screws, no feet, and an AT surround for the connectors.
OK, out to the shed, find the old heaps I picked up from the dump months ago.
Strip from same, screws, standoffs, feet, etc.
Build the 850 back into the short case.
The new mobo came with a light weight ATX connector surround plate, so used that.
Turned the box over and glued the feet on with contact cement.
So far so good.
A little side project:
Most folks who run DC herds will be very familiar with the back of their cows.
Afterall that's where the connectors are.
When the network crashes, or when you really need to talk to them.
You've got to get to the back, plug in monitors, k/bs, etc...
Since I got all these boxes into my server rack.
It has been a real pain to try and get to the front of them to hit the power switch to restart them.
Reboot, or after a power glitch, etc.
So today I bought some small push button switches.
Cut the front panel wiring out of a old AT case.
Drilled some old case back metals.
Mounted the switches and soldered on the wires.
Now I have 'power on' buttons.
On the back of my cows!
OK. Back to the new box.
Cleaned out the midi case.
Lined up the standoffs.
Dropped the 1.3G Duron into the socket.
Took a deep breath, and fitted the HSF.
Why are these things so tight?
Put all my other good bits in.
Went to put in the brand new 256 stick of SD.
Hey? What's going on here?
This mobo only supports DDR!
Auuuggghhh!!!
Wont get it booted this weekend.
Bugger
Oh Well

Put it aside until next weekend.
Have to find some DDR this week.
Chrs Rusty.
