Talk [FaD] Just can't help it!

After months of under-employment and associated poverty.
Where I've been living on my Credit Card.

I've managed to work three full weeks in a row.
Late last week I noticed.
My credit equalled my debits in my account list.

So this weekend I celebrated by:

Having a big nite in the bars, Friday.
And buying today, new cow bones!

Woohoo!

Scored a GB GA-7DXP [133 AMD] Mobo and ATI Rage 16M Vidcard.
On Ebay.
Ordered a 1.3G Duron and 256M SD from a local supplier.
Will source a case local.

So sometime in the next few weeks.
I hope to be adding to the herd.

Note To TeamTIMO FaD.
You buggers!

I could think of better things to do with my resources.
But when it comes to competing in a DC.
I just can't help it!

R.

Yeah well, I'm bored and need to build a new box.
But I'm still gonna blame DC!

I gave up fighting the urge to build more, Got a spare case here, 350w power supply, now I just have to get a board and chip for it......

Oh well, next one up is going to replace 2 x 450's (weak K6-2's)

but, sure we'll take the blame (and yes it's very addicting)

Heh heh...come to think of it I've almost got enough parts to make another cow myself. I think about the only thing I would need is a motherboard, chip and some ram...I think I have about everything else. The question is...where to hook the darn thing up. lol.

DPA I wouldn't hold your breath...lol. I had a f145 go 3 days before I completed it with only 1 hit. Granted it was on a 750mhz...but even with a 2400+ it would take a while. And for 1 hit? Doh.

Hey RustyGT - looking forward to you having another cow added to the cause

BTW, DPA/Gouki - I've been running that same job (although it's 1f45 not f145) and after about 25 hrs it's @ 72% and 3 hits...I'm on a 1.2GHz T-Bird so maybe by tomorrow morning it should be done.

Good luck with the new cow!
I just sold two old computers (and will be selling one more) so I think I'll be building a new system shortly. I'm thinking about an XP1700 on an 8rda cuz a lot of people had great luck with them.

Update on the upgrade.

Got the Duron and SD Tuesday. Mobo arrived Friday.

Cool!

Got a s/h empty low profile tower case for $20.

So got all the bits. Started work at 2 this arvo.

1st, strip the 850 and mobo out of it's midi tower.
It can go in the short case, the 1.3 will need the extra space of a midi case.
Had a good look at the cheap short case.
No stand offs, no back metals, no screws, no feet, and an AT surround for the connectors.

OK, out to the shed, find the old heaps I picked up from the dump months ago.
Strip from same, screws, standoffs, feet, etc.
Build the 850 back into the short case.
The new mobo came with a light weight ATX connector surround plate, so used that.
Turned the box over and glued the feet on with contact cement.

So far so good.

A little side project:
Most folks who run DC herds will be very familiar with the back of their cows.
Afterall that's where the connectors are.
When the network crashes, or when you really need to talk to them.
You've got to get to the back, plug in monitors, k/bs, etc...
Since I got all these boxes into my server rack.
It has been a real pain to try and get to the front of them to hit the power switch to restart them.
Reboot, or after a power glitch, etc.

So today I bought some small push button switches.
Cut the front panel wiring out of a old AT case.
Drilled some old case back metals.
Mounted the switches and soldered on the wires.

Now I have 'power on' buttons.
On the back of my cows!

OK. Back to the new box.

Cleaned out the midi case.
Lined up the standoffs.
Dropped the 1.3G Duron into the socket.
Took a deep breath, and fitted the HSF.
Why are these things so tight?

Put all my other good bits in.
Went to put in the brand new 256 stick of SD.
Hey? What's going on here?

This mobo only supports DDR!
Auuuggghhh!!!

Wont get it booted this weekend.
Bugger

Oh Well Put it aside until next weekend.
Have to find some DDR this week.

Chrs Rusty.
