[FaD] Question about crunching two jobs at once...

Hello!

I just noticed that one of my boxes is processing two jobs at a time. None of my others do that. It's got the latest stable version of Think, and it only has one CPU so it's not a Dually. Why is it doing this? I don't mind, I'm just kinda curious!

Also, does it automatically update to the newest version? Because, yesterday, I clicked 'Receive' to get more jobs in my cache, and then it said something about updating Think, and started to download different files like 'Tray' and 'Server', and other program files. It seemed to be replacing my think files with the newest ones... But I'm kinda upset because during the process it failed a job that had taken about two weeks!!! It had over 650 Hits!!!

I guess I'll live, but I'm just wondering why it did that?

Thanks!!

David

Not sure why it failed David, I had a job do that because that instance of think was not stopped when the version upgraded.

But if you are talking about 2 jobs with one PC's name, that is because the newest version allocates another job to any PC over 90% done, (so no other computer takes it) This is a massive change, but it has some major advantages.(too many to list)

You can reset the job and re-process it if you would like, Or remove it, IF you are running a Queue server you can also reset it, and assign it to your fastest PC so it will be done a bit faster.

If you have any questions just ask, If I didn't answer any of yours, sorry.

(btw I really like the new version)

Also if you enter Task Mangler do you see 2 think.exe's?

Well, the box that popped up said that it would wait 'till think was done processing(100%) then it would upgrade. Next time I looked, the box was gone, but the jobs had not finished. Think wasn't running either. Well, I rebooted(just to make sure that it was done with the upgrade) and started think. Then about 5 mins later, I looked at the queue and the job with 650+ hits was red and at 0%

In saying 'Queue server' I believe you are talking about having a central server that all the PCs get their cached jobs from? If that's what you mean, then no, I'm not running it that way. Think is just installed individually on all my machine, and all the jobs show that machines name on them. I mean that there are two jobs being processed at the same time byt the same machine. (See attached pic for screenshot of my Queue.)

I only see one think.exe running in task manager, and it's using about 97-98% of the CPU.

Forgot to mention that all of the jobs used to say 'APACHE'(machine's name) under the "Node" section, but since it upgraded, all but the newest job say '3000767.001'. Why?

Thanks!

Oops!

Sorry! Forgot to include the attachment!

BTW, why can't you add an attachment when you edit a post? I had to make another post just to put the pic up here...

BTW, the one with the 0 is the one that failed.

I did what you said, but it gave me this:

Quote:
(10) Job state incompatible
Keep in mind that both jobs in green are processing and both jobs are continually raising the percentage of completion. Both are in state '5'.
Thanks!

Any more advice to why it processes two at the same time? Again, it's not a dually.

David

David,

I had this same thing happen last week (two jobs running on a single processor machine). The way that it happened for me was I was looking at the queue window and then went to view and instead of unchecking queue to hide it I selected graphics instead by mistake (which for some reason wasn't checked although think was running at the time). This opened a new graphic which in tern started a new job running at the same time as the job that was currently in progress. I can't remember for sure, but I think I right clicked on the new job and reset it (hadn't been running but for a minute or so.)

That might be it, although to my knowledge, when you click the View > Graphics button, it just shows you the current molecule being processed, it doesn't open a new one. It's only checked when you have it 'shown' on the desktop at the time. I may be wrong, but I know that I have clicked the 'Graphics' button, and all it does is show the current job being processed, not open a new one. But thanks a lot for the suggestion! Do you have any other idea why it would do that?

Thanks

David

yeah, I know it doesn't make any sense, and I tried to repeat it just after it happened (was curiuos about why it had happened) but I could not repeat it. Perhaps it was just a random fluke thing though.

Does it show up as multiple 'think.exe' in task manager? 'Cause mine only whoes one, even though it's processing two jobs at the same time.

Is it better to process two jobs at once, or one at a time? Which will get jobs done faster? (That's all I'm really concerned about!! )

David

BTW, Thanks for all the advice and info!
