[FaD] new version + linux !

We are currently planning to release THINK 1.21a for Windows to the beta community on Tuesday late morning. This may be of course be delayed ...

The Linux version is expected to be available about 48 hours later.

Well, hopefully I can get my test Mandrake box up and crunching by Wednesday night, then!!

Be interesting to see how mature this beta linux client is.

Have to make sure we get a nice download link in this thread when it's up.

I've not gone through a client change with FaD.. does it update itself? or do I have to update it? if so.. do I have to first uninstall the old client?

It updates itself

The update will be downloaded as soon as you return/upload a job after it has been made available. I believe the update will first only be sent to the users who chose to participate in betatesting (in the setup panel).

There is a gotcha for those using single queue server, though, daft. No clients will get new jobs untill all queue jobs have been stopped, I don't think, or something like that. I reckon mondo put something in his FAQ about it - might be worth looking at before Tues am. I know I will.

If there is an UPGRADE to the software from FIND-a-DRUG, all of your THINK clients will stop as they finish JOBS. Once all THINK clients have stopped, the upgrade will take place, however, none of the THINK remote clients will restart. A pending upgrade cannot occur until all THINK clients are stopped!. If you become aware that an upgrade is pending, Shut down all clients, reboot the QUEUE server … let the upgrade take place … start all the Clients. This will keep you crunching non-stop through and upgrade.

Maybe we should try to inform the linux community about the new linux client coming out. Anybody have any ideas?

Weel the latest news about the new beta and linux client is Monday is the day! From the FaD forums:

We now expect 1.21a to be available to the beta community on Monday 10 February (2003!)

and

THINK continues to run very well on our Linux boxes. We expect to release 1.21a beta on Monday assuming the forum remains up etc.

So linux beta will come out with the windoze beta!!

Can't wait to test the linux client!

Some further info for those running FaD on a network, and opting for beta testing:

Beta test members who are running a network installation are invited to download a new version of tray which should be started on the networked clients. This is also mirrored on the .com and .co.uk servers (but NOT .net or .org.uk or anything else!) The new version of tray.exe will ensure that when 1.21a is downloaded, after THINK is stopped to install the new version it is automatically restarted. Previously (and without the new version of tray installed), THINK had to be manually restarted on the networked clients.

This is good news for me since I'll be away from home when the beta is downloaded.
