You can select from the control panel in the programs folder the method you want FAD to connect. It has several choices.

i have noticed that... another question though:

how do i keep fad running in the background with out it popping up all the time? if i click on Think, it pops open to full screen (even if i have it set to window). if i hide it, it stops working.... hmm....

(also how much bandwidth does it consume when connecting?)

In the 'General' tab of the control panel set both 'THINK Graphics' and 'Job Queue Server' to 'Hidden'
At least that is how mine is set up and it puts a small blue icon in the system tray that is interactive. I use Task Manager to see the performance of the CPU and to verify that it is indeed working. It always stays at 99-100%.

I don't know how much bandwidth it uses but it downloads a 3-400k file sometimes depending on the job. With DSL it takes mere seconds to transfer.

not only can the Graphics and Queue server windows be hidden, but with the new client, you can even hide the system tray icon. just run setup and uncheck the 'Show system tray icon' option.

hi butch,
I presume you mean how much data does it download because it will use as much bandwidth ("net speed") as is available, depending on the load at their end.
For the one laptap (presumption!), the data downloaded would be minimal ... it really depends on its speed and the particular DC jobs you are doing. I certainly doubt that it would be of concern to you - it's not anything like peer-to-peer downloading (ie napster style).
What is the limit they place on you at your school?

Cheers,
Elad.

PS from the FAQ at the FAD site:-
" How much data is transferred?
This does vary. The minimum downloaded is about 5Kbytes, but when a new protein target is required a further 50Kbytes will be transferred. These quantities are small compared to most other Distributing Computing projects are will normally be transferred in much less than 1 minute. "
