Unable to access the internet over wireless network

I am trying to help a friend set up a wireless network with a new PC and Router/PCI network card. She got a microsoft "base station"/wireless access point, which IMO is probably her first mistake
Anyway, the instructions have been followed to the letter which includes installing and setting up the software, hooking up the router, and installing the wireless PCI network card. right now the two computers are about 5 feet apart. The first computer is wired to the router via ethernet cable and works just fine, The cable connection works like normal through the router. The second computer is unable to access the internet over the wireless network. The strange thing is that the computers can see and communicate with each other over the network, which really rules out any problems with the hardware. We've tried pretty much everything i can think of including reinstalling the software, resetting everything, checking all cables and connections, configuring the router and PCI card to be on the same channel, setting up the router to function as a DHCP server which is what our ISP says to do, and going through all provided troubleshooting information and also everything on the microsoft site, which naturally isnt much.
