Personally, I'd go with 5/8th's thick Plywood. 1/2 inch just never seems strong enough, plus thicker plywood gives you more options if you want to mount something to the shelve ( flexibility! ). Of course, I tend for overkill on everything, but what the heck! If it's worth doing, it's worth Overdoing!
