Can't blame you, factory-made units are fine, but too restrictive. But they ARE cheap & fast if it'll fill the need or fit the space. What kind of shelving do you want? Wall hanging? If so, what types of walls? With open-frame stud walls, shelf hanging is pretty darn simple, while concrete walls are a major pain for this.
What will go on the shelfs makes a big difference too - they need to be strong enough! For garage shelves, I'd overkill because they'll get weighted down at some point over the years.
At least ½" plywood for the shelf, ripped to width, no greater than 12". Make brackets from 2x2's, built into a 90 degree triangle. Place a bracket on every other stud with 3" screws, NOT nails - you may want to move them some day!
If they're likely to hold REALLY heavy things, then increase the thickness & # of brackets accordingly!!
