Not to make excuses, but Saddam was considered the lesser of two evils at the time. We helped Saddam in the Iran/Iraq war, but not so much that it lead to a quick victory. Perhaps the real travesty there is that we didn’t help more, because the limited help we gave caused the war to go on longer than it would have otherwise.

They could not possible go it alone
right now. It would be anarchy. Despite the efforts of the "resistance" to turn it into anarchy there is some semblance of stability under US control. My hope is that the rebuilding process goes as quickly as possible and the country is turned over to the Iraqi people under self-rule. I see the “resistance” doing more to get in the way of this rather than speeding the process along.
