I've seen one smartmedia card at work get busted just from repeated inserting and removal (to put the card into a card reader, then back into the camera). I've 'lost' my wallet twice in the past month, and I'm not yet on that vacation trip
:-\ Being the son of a Murphy, I think I'd better not push it. The camera would be kept with batteries and a mini tripod in a camera pouch fastened to my belt. I've never yet lost my belt.
The goal here is to use a SmartMedia card that is as large as possible and simply leave the card in the camera; it sounds like nobody has links for either the 'Official' statement that SmartMedia has a limitation, nor any links for SmartMedia cards bigger than 128. My choices are fairly fixed. Thanks to all who took the time to post.
