NIC (SMC 1211TX) with RedHat 8.0

i have an SMC 1211TX NIC, and linux recognizes it as a Realtek 8139 SMC EZ Card, which i've heard is correct. But, i am unable to active it from network configuration unless i put a static IP, but then i cant browse. Its using the 8139too module, and I'm wondering if it needs the rtl8139 module, but i dont know how to set that up (I'm really new to linux)

heres some more info on it:

-the link light doesnt go on
-the td light on my modem doesnt go off
-when i boot up, when it tries to bring up the interface for eth0, it says something like this: no connection present. check cable?[Failed] (yes, its plugged in)
-when i select bootp or dialup in network configurations, and go back into it to select DHCP, DHCP is greyed out, but i can still select it
-when i try to activate the device, it says it cant, and if i fill in static information for it, it lets me activate it, but i still cant use it.
-and i noticed there's an empty socket on my NIC, I'm wondering if i need something there (either that, or something's wrong with my DHCP)
