it really depends on the hardware. Some cards' ALSA support offers more features and/or better sound. Sometimes not!
You have to see for yourself.
My SB Live value works just fine with the latest drivers (kernel 2.4.13) and I can at last have both front and rear speakers (no bass treble though and it should be there).
There was a site that compared the drivers for sound cards. If I come accross it I'll let you know.
